The four appearances in 1793 and 1794 were all associated with Perry (and other associates of Perry's like Gordon and Gillies). Barnes also appeared in 1798 at a Masquerade with Perry. Five out of six entries in 1795 and early 1796 were associated with Newton. So possibly there were two Barnes, or maybe Barnes developed a friendship with Newton. But the Barnes at Perry's is likely to have been John Barnes, stockbroker who was executor of the 1796 will of Perry's partner James Gray. A John Barnes signed the Declaration of the Friends to the Liberty of the Press (Dec 1792 - Mar 1793) and also that of the Society of the Friends to the People 11.4.1792. In 10.2.1794 a John Barnes (presumably not the stockbroker) was keeper of a coffee house in Compton Street where the London Corresponding Society met (Thale), but in general Godwin did not socialise much with the LCS members. And a John Barnes attorney was in the 1798 Law List. A John Barnes stockbroker of Cornhill died in 1782 but his will (PCC) mentions no son, or relative called John.
