James Marshall's family I am still trying to unearth. The above entries probably refer mostly to Mary or Mary Ann Marshall, probably the same person as they both appear with Leonora Knapp, Godwin's landlady. The MM in 1796 was more isolated in time so less clear. This person may have been a wife, daughter, mother or sister of James Marshall, who may well have had more than one wife. The name is very common and Marshall may have given little importance to baptisms and weddings. The last time that Godwin called on Marshall and found him in, was 29.5.1830 when "adv. L Knapp" whom Godwin may not have seen in 15 years (see my entry for Knapp, Leonora). Godwin recorded Marshall's death on 22.10.1832 as 'M dies', and though he probably appeared in Godwin's diary more times than any other person Godwin seems not to have attended his funeral. He was perhaps the James Marshall buried at St George's Gravesend on 29.10.1832 though I don't know why at Gravesend.

James son of James & Mary Ann Marshall born 2.12.1794 baptised 11.12.1794 St Pancras / Thomas son of James & Mary Marshall born 28.4.1796 baptised 27.6.1796 St Pancras
