HENRY ROBERT MORLAND (1716x19-1797)
CURRENT TEXT "(1716x19-1797), painter and engraver, the son of the genre painter George Henry Morland (d.1789) of St James's Square, London, was born on 6 October 1716 or in 1718 or 1719. Although his existence was doubted by Martin Davies (p.101), an entry for George Henry Morland is included in Ellis Waterhouse's British Eighteenth Century Painters in Oils and Crayons (p.247). Joseph Farington recorded on 15 June 1795 that Morland was seventy-six years old (Farington, Diary, 2.353)."
SUGGESTED CHANGE <(1716-1797), painter and engraver, was born on 6 October 1716 and baptised 20 November 1716 at St James's, Westminster, son of Thomas Morland, painter of Pall Mall (d.1747), and his wife Elizabeth. He was apprenticed in 1732 to the portrait painter *Isaac Whood*.>
NOTES The source for George Henry Morland goes back to Samuel Redgrave's Dictionary 1878 which attributes several works to him now considered to be by Henry Robert Morland, and the grant of 1760 from the Society of Artists mentioned in Redgrave, Bryan and the old DNB was presumably to Henry Robert as well, since 1760 was when he was in financial difficulty. The will of Thomas Morland of St James' was proved Prerogative Court of Canterbury 1747 by his widow Elizabeth. General Advertiser 26.1.1748 for sale of his prints and drawings. NOTES Redgrave gave his date and place of death but Graves RA exhibitors (1906) lists an address for him at 6 Carlisle St Soho in 1792 (later than his Stephen Street address which was in St Pancras), which fits with his place of burial at St Anne Soho. CURRENT TEXT "and the brother of Maria Morland, also an artist, who exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1785 and 1786."
SUGGESTED CHANGE <and of Maria Morland (1764-1832), also an artist, who exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1785 and 1786 and married the printmaker *William Ward* in 1786.>
NOTES see William Ward above for burial of Maria Ward. Redgrave thought Maria Morland was Henry Robert Morland's wife, and Bryan's corrected this to sister, but she was in fact his daughter born 1.10.1764 bapt 29.10.1764 at St James' Piccadilly dau of Henry Robert & Jane Morland
