Lord William Murray born 20.3.1762 3rd son of John Murray 3rd Duke of Atholl. Served in America 1777, Capt 42nd foot 1778; 1784 fought duel in East Indies with Lt Gilbert Waugh who died 3 days after; 1787 envoy to Lower Egypt; 1789 married Mary Ann daughter of James Hodges, lived at Tidmarsh, 1 son, 1dau; was at Bath 13.11.1791, writ issued 11.1.1792 for debt by James Sims, wine merchant, Henry Chawner (qv) one of many creditors; Lady Murray gave birth to a child in Wright's lock-up house; 21.4.1792 to Kings Bench orison; 25.4.1792 he swore an affidavit concerning his capture of a £20,000 prize vessel; December 1792 he chaired loyalist meeting in K B prison; 3.7.1793 along with Dr Jackson, Dr Crossfield and William Stabler attempted escape while turnkeys played racquets (Nat Arch HO42/26/27 John Fearly said Lord Wm & Dr Jackson offered him money to recruit 'Bumper' Jones & Thomas Judge to attack turnkeys, Lord Wm later informed him the plan had been abandoned as the Marshal's men had been alerted HO42/26/26 Thomas Judge said plan was hatched soon after Lord Rawdon's bill was thrown out of House of Commons); sent to Newgate; 7.10.1793 he was put on trial by the state side prisoners, (Lord George) Israel Abraham Gordon in the chair - M'Can (see Macan, Thomas Townley), Frost, Stabler, H D Symonds, James Ridgeway and Thomas Lloyd found him guilty, Wiliam Holland and Matthew Miller found him not guilty, and James Nowlan and Murray himself abstained; 18.10.1793 Morning Post reported all visitors to state side must now sign in and that Mr Reeves had been visiting Lord Wm; 7.11.1793 William Holland published his 'Promenade' with figures of Zenobio, Wolcot, Tooke, Gordon, Murray and Lady Murray and their son; 4.8.1794 a newspaper commented that he 'does not avail himself of the present Act of Grace' referring to debtors' amnesty; miniature of him by A Taylor shown at RA 1796; died 30.12.1796 in Newgate after ten days bowel complaint.
