SOCIETY FOR CONSTITUTIONAL INFORMATION: Capt Perry of Salisbury St, Adelphi proposed member 27.4.1792 by Robert Merry 2nded John Williams

Sampson Perry (DNB 1747-1823?) which is vague about his family details. (See Lorraine Millard's thesis Univ Queensland 2015 by a google search on Sampson Perry. She mentions Duncan van Reisjwoud as her source for genealogical information). He was probably the Sampson Perry son of John & Mary bapt 30.12.1748 at Deritend Warwicks. He joined Lodge no 14 of the United Grand Lodge of Freemasons on 2.12.1772 and declined on 24.6.1774. He voted as a surgeon in the Strand 1774 for Percy & Clinton. In Westminster ratebooks he was in the Strand in 1774 then at Argyle St, St James Piccy from 1775 to1792. He married Mary Armstrong a minor of East Greenwich with consent of her father William Armstrong Esq at St James Piccadilly 30.6.1775 by Archbishop of Canterbury's licence. The register didn't record whether Perry was a bachelor or widower (the licence may do but that requires a visit to Lambeth Palace Library), but Charlotte dau of Sampson & Mary Perry was born 11.12.1769 and bapt 21.3.1770 at St Katherine Creechurch London. If Mary Armstrong was her mother she would have been only 15 at conception.  William Sampson Perry son of Sampson & Mary was born 21.5.1776 and bapt 24.6.1776 at Totteridge, Herts. William Augustus son of Sampson Perry & Anne born 6.7.1777 bapt 18.1.1784 St Benet  Gracechurch London. Then there were two children of Sampson Perry & Sarah bapt at St Marylebone, Harriet born 26.1.1780 bapt 5.3.1780, and Frederick Adolphus born 16.5.1781 bapt 8.6.1781. An Ancestry user-submitted tree names this Sarah as Sarah Patience, same surname as Perry's next wife, but I couldn't found any source for this. World 28.10.1788 reported the marriage of Charles Augustus West Esq to Miss Perry, daughter of Sampson Perry Esq of Argyle-street, though a transcribed record on FindMyPast gives this marriage as to Charlotte dau of Sampson Perry on 28.11.1789 at Chelsea. Perry married as widower on 3.10.1809 at St Andrew Undershaft by banns Susanna Patience spinster (he was 62, she was 51). Since Perry returned to newspaper owning in 1809 it's possible Susanna Patience brought him some money. William Sampson Perry son of Sampson Perry and Barbara Bennett was born 26.5.1810 and bapt 13.6.1810 at St Pancras. Susannah Perry of Southampton St age 55 was buried 23.4.1813 St George Bloomsbury. Sampson Perry widower and Barbara Ogle spinster were married 24.11.1814 at St Bride Fleet St, and on 2.6.1819 five children of Sampson & Barbara Perry of Southampton St were baptised at St George Bloomsbury, Sampson Henry Owen Watson born 28.9.1813, Louisa Helen Maria born 28.2.1814, William Champion born 4.3.1816, Charles James Clowes born 2.4.1817, and Edward Watson born 28.6.1818. Clara Elizabeth dau of Sampson and Barbara Perry was born 3.10.1823 (after Perry's death) and bapt 5.11.1823 at St Luke Old St of Goswell St (see also Morn Chron 7.10.1823). Sampson Perry died on 22.7.1823 (Morning Post 25.7.1823) and was buried 30.7.1823 at St George Bloomsbury age 77 of Southampton St. Reports of the coroner's inquest (Lancaster Gazette 2.8.1823, Caledonian Mercury 4.8.1823) referred to his wife as elderly and aged but in fact she was carrying his child. Bennett was maybe the pretended widow status that mistresses often assumed when abandoned by their protectors, and was really Barbara Ogle spinster. Barberah dau of William and Celia Elizabeth Ogle of St Benet Pauls Wharf was bapt 18.5.1784 at St Swithin London Stone. Her mother Celia Elizabeth Ogle was buried at Islington 28.9.1817 of Frederick Place. Her son, who was then Inspector of Police for Finsbury, married Mary Jane Churchill as Sampson Henry Bennett Owen Watson Perry at St Pancras on 28.9.1833, adding in the Bennett which didn't appear in his baptism record. (There seems to have been another Sampson Perry who married Susannah Dolton at Shoreditch on 19.2.1781 both parties signing with an X. Rebecca dau of Sampson & Susannah Perry bapt Feb 1786 St Martin i t Fields. Sarah dau of Sampson & Susanna Perry bapt 12.7.1791 St Martin Birmingham. Sampson Perry bur 23.7.1815 age 63 from St Giles i t Fields at Spa Fields Countess of Huntingdon's Connection Chapel) On the marriage certificate of Perry's son Charles James on 29.12.1841 at St Bride's his father's occupation was stated as Editor of the Morning Chronicle (who was the probably unrelated James Perry DNB 1756-1821). Charles James was only six when his father died but it seems a very Victorian amnesia. Also of interest was Charles James address, Southampton St Bloomsbury, so his family must have become prosperous enough to return from Goswell St
