1801 at Nicholson's may have been John Mitchell DNB 1785-1859 army officer and writer, as the DNB states "In 1801 he was sent to a mathematical school in London taught by a Mr Nicholson".

1831 was probably Henry Armstrong Mitchell 1799-1854 publisher of the…

Mitchell

HCR diary 15.2.1822 Mitchells at Masqueriers

28.3.1829 Mrs Mitchell at Masqueriers in Brighton

John James Masquerier (DNB 1778-1855) married in 1812 Rachel widow of Rober Eden Scott and daughter of Duncan Forbes-Mitchell. The Mitchells could well have been the family of one of her married brothers then living, either John Forbes-Mitchell born 1784, married Ann Powell in 1809, had 6 children and died  9.7.1822, or Henry David Forbes-Mitchell born 1790,…

Moffat, William

Moffat 31.12.1793 at Thelwals / 28.1.1794 at Muir's / 26.1.1801 at Charles Lamb's (probably a different Moffat).

A letter from Maurice Margarot in Edinburgh to the London Corresponding Society received 26.12.1793 introduced the bearer William Moffatt (Thale) so he had only been in London a week when Godwin met him. Moir

In 1794 version of Godwin's 1796 list for 1784, left out of 1796 list / 14.12.1796 Moir at House of Commons (Austrian Subsidy)

Probably the Rev John Moir (see D Rivers, Literary memoirs of Living Authors p 51 (1798) who said he was "supposed to have been concerned in some of the newspapers") curate and rector of St Dionis Backchurch, supposed to have written a life of C J Fox in 1783 (also ascribed to a Mr Laurence) but his work "Preventive Policy" was said to be of quite conservative views. Morning Chronicle 22.11.1823 said Thomas Erskine when briefly Lord Chancellor…

Moira

9.7.1800 dine at la. Moira's / 11.7.1800 call on Moira / 24.7.1800 again / 1.8.1800 call on la. Moira / 9.8.1800 dine at la. Moira's / 13.4.1808 Countess of Moira dies / 28.11.1826 Hastings dies

The two calls on Moira in Dublin were between two dinners at La. Moira's. Otherwise Godwin only recorded their deaths, using the name Hastings for Lord Moira. It is possible that Moira in 1800 referred to Lady Moira and that Godwin never met Lord Moira. See Francis Hastings DNB 1754-1826 and Elizabeth Rawdon DNB 1731-1808.

Sir Henry Wellwood Moncrieff 1750-1827 minister of the Church of Scotland (see Burke's Peerage & Baronetage). Though a supporter of Fox, he doesn't seem a likely candidate for Holcroft's visitor in 1796

Montagu, Basil

The DNB entry for Basil Montagu is in error about the date Montagu married his 2nd wife, Laura Rush, which was at Glasgow on 6.9.1801. His 3rd wife was clearly the one in entries after 1806, she was famous as Thomas and Jane Carlyle's 'noble lady'.

Although Montagu first appeared in Godwin's 1796 list for 1795, the entry for 6.12.1794 was only a 'see' so may have been him.

The B M on f 46r of Vol VII of Godwin's diary before the 1796 list is surely him, see Montague, Sidney

Montague, Sidney

Godwin's diary Vol VII f 46r Sidney Montague for India, 1788 - refuses 5 guineas of BM, & takes 5s - about 21

See Gentleman Radical by C & D K Bewley, which cites Mrs Thelwall's Life of John Thelwall p77 and Samuel Rogers' Recollections p145. Sidney Montague was said to be Horne Tooke's illegitimate son, but I can find very little evidence for it in the sources that the Bewleys cite, they presumably had other sources that they didn't cite, particularly for the events involving Basil Montagu, who must be the B M above. Godwin's note above may be for all I know one…
