L'Evesque

HCR diary 22.3.1838 "I have some hope of obtaining throughh L'Evesque an introduction to Seguire"

Seguire was William Seguier (DNB 1772-1843), keeper of the National Gallery from 1824 (QV*). Robinson wanted to sell some of Aders' pictures to the Gallery. The most prosperous Levesque in London was Peter Levesque of 29 Guildford St, Russell Sq, who was Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, of the Royal Geographical Society, and active in the Royal Literary Fund. He was probably born 31.7.1779 of Pierre Levesque and Anne Olivier and baptised 18.8.1779 or born 6.6.1781 of Louis Daniel…

Landor

NCR diary 21.5.1832 with Landor "We went first to Mrs A: and had the good luck to find her going to the gallery and we accompanied her - L: was exceedingly delighted with their pictures - some of which he declared with his usual exaggeration to be finer than Raphael etc however his judgement seemed in substance to be that of Mrs A: and I daresay they were pleased with each other"

25.5.1832 "with Mrs Aders - An interesting rather than comfortable chat about Landor who is high in favor on account of his admiration of their pictures - and Mrs A: says his judgement is quite…

Landseer, Mrs

CRABB ROBINSON DIARY 25.5.1820 Mrs Lanseer, mother of the artist - radical views

12.6.1827 "the late Mrs Lanseer was a firm believer and Unitarian Christian"

I could find no trace of the death of Mrs Ann Landseer but she seems to have been the person Crabb Robinson was referring to (see below for details). In noting her Christian beliefs Robinson was defending her against those who confounded her radical views with disbelief. He could not have meant John Landseer's wife Jane nee Potts who lived till 1840

14.6.1822 "to Aders. The Miss Lanes there - Miss L: senr is a governess at Mr Eaton's near Newmarket" (next passage in shorthand) "pressed me much to call on her, and offered to come and meet me at N: She is an agreeable woman and Mrs Aders praised her much but cannot account for her being so very prevenant…

Laurent

HCR diary 8.10.1831 "dinner at Aders, but Laurent the painter and a Mr Corbould were there so we had not much conversation"

13.10.1831 "Laurent who is cleaning A's pictures is in raptures at their excellence"

There were a number of French painters at the time called Laurent or Laurens, none of them is said in the art dictionaries to have visited England. Jean Francois Laurent born Brussels 1773 was probably the most likely, as he was said in Benezit to have been a painter and art restorer. Joseph Bonaventure Laurens 1801-1890 made extensive travels in Europe…

Leclerc, Mlle

HCR diary 11.5.1822 at Aders where Kiesewtter performed "A Mlle Leclerc was also there - a fine girl who sang Italian airs with great spirit and effect - she is young & interesting and I have no doubt will excite a strong sensation when she appears - her performance was to me rather admirable than pleasing"

I could find no references to Mlle Leclerc in newspapers, musical dictionaries, or English deaths or marriages

Lemme

HCR diary 6.1.1833 at Aders in lock up "at his place I found Lemme - I was pleased by the cordial manners of L: towards A: and that A: had made up his mind to carry into effect the agreement with Loevenhagen and Jameson - L: I found thought that I had offered too much and that A's engagement should be only honorary"

20.4.1833 wrote to "Lemme stating on what conditions and understanding I consented to become trustee for Aders"

29.4.1833 "attended for the first time in Warwick St, Aders, Lemmé, Loevenhagen, Richardson and Upton, and there…

She is no slight sufferer thro' this affair as she loses a home. Mrs B: offered to take her to the Continent but Miss L: feels that she ought not to accept the offer"

Ley, Hugh

HCR diary 25.2.1826 "dined at Henry Rogers' at Highbury" a Dr Leigh or Lee among guests

25.1.1837 "The mortality of this season is unusually great - Dr Ley is gone"

Reminiscences 19.10.1857 Mrs Aders' daughter Ellen Kelly "I should think about the worst person I ever knew - She was plain in person but had a certain humour & vivacity in society which enabled her to gain the affections of an amiable M.D. a Dr Ley whom she married and all but ruined - She spent his money pawned his plate & so tormented him by her misconduct every way, that she killed…
