Tho West 10.12.1801 See Godwin, Harriet. Only the West entries from this one till 1804 belonged to this person, none of the others had a T. On 14.3.1804 Mrs T West was his wife Lucy and Mrs Dallas her mother Elizabeth.

The subject om 8.12.1795 was "Are not the most probable means left of saving the country from the despotism of the Minister - an immediate junction of the Whig Interest and the Corresponding Society?" The debate was not concluded that night and Godwin doesn't seem to have bothered to return.

Although Wathen could have been Jonathan Wathen, noncomformist surgeon of Walbrook, or Josiah Iles Wathen, special pleader Middle Temple, Wharton came (inserted above the line) directly after Seward and Goring in 1793 in Godwin's 1796 list, so this was very likely John Wharton (History of Parliament) 1765-1843. Thomas Wheeler buried 11.8.1847 Norwood Cemetery aged 93 from Newcastle Court, College Hill. 1775 freedom of Apothecaries Co. Probably the TW who married Ann Blatch sp 24.6.1789 St Pancras. 1801 candidate for apothecary to St Barts in place of Mr Roberts, had been assistant apothecary there for 17 years, address Bolt Court, Fleet St. Retired as apothecary to St Barts 1822. 1841 census Gracechurch St. Will PCC 1847 of St Bartholomews Hospital mentions six sons Thomas Lowe, Charles West, William Lowe, James Lowe, Lowe & Joseph.

Perhaps Charlotte or Penelope daughters of Edward Wheler will PCC 1785 brother of Rev Charles Wheler 7th bart. 1730-1821. Charlotte died unmarried in 1861 and Penelope married Charles John Craven in 1817. Their cousin the 8th bart Trevor Wheler 1763-1830 married Harriet dau of Richard Beresford of Ashbourne, Derbys in 1792 but I couldn't find any connection between the Beresfords of Ashbourne and Benjamin Beresford from Bewdley, Worcs who married Hamilton Rowan's sister (see my entry for Beresford). These entries are coded on GD website to a generic White person record. While the other White entries in 1810 and adjacent years may all belong to James White DNB 1775-1820, these three entries were likely a creditor or friend of Benjamin Tabart whose bankruptcy proceedings they were part of. This could have been James White in his business as newspaper agent or perhaps a friend of Tabart's, but some other possibles were John White (…

Seems very likely to be the surgeon (DNB 1781-1849). For example on 18.3.1835 Godwin calls on him ", confined one week". Though the DNB doesnt mention his wife, his will (Nat Arch PROB11/2090) mentions the portrait "of my late dear wife". (This portrait was said to have won George Dawe his election to the Royal Academy). Though Godwin dined or supped 4 times at Ant White's where Geo White was present each time, they were not brothers. A soldier serving in India who called on Godwin perhaps paying him to write for him. Godwin wrote to Maj White on 10.5.1793, which may not have been him as his promotion to Major was in 1798, though officers on half pay were often given the honour of one extra rank. Then Maj White called on 20.7.1798, 25.10.1798, 29.10.1798, 9.11.1798, 11.11.1798 and 13.11.1798. Miss White was perhaps a sister of Lamb's friend James White DNB 1775-1820 who was probably the White of the next entries above, and many later ones. (The GD website has different Whites coded to one generic person record White). He was born in Bewdley, Worcs and his siblings may have been Joseph b1772, Sarah b1777 & Polly b1779. Polly may have been a Margaret White who died 1864. Lamb also mentioned the Whites of Bishopsgate St in a letter to Barron Field of 1820.…

Joseph White (DNB 1746-1814) was called Dr White in the diary. He appeared in Godwin's 1796 list as Dr White in 1787, the year he received his doctorate (also in 1794 version as White). Godwin called on him at Oxford 13.10.1794 but he was 'nah' (not at home), and finally got to meet him again at Oxford on 9.10.1801, by which time they would have had very different political views but Godwin was probably attracted by his scholarship and his humble origins.
