Wilkie 23.3.1805 at Philips'

Later Wilkies have been coded on GD website to David Wilkie DNB 1785-1841 but since his Life by Alan Cunningham makes it clear from Wilkie's own records that he arrived in London for the first time on 20.5.1805 this must be another Wilkie. David had a brother Robert in London but this was more likely to have been George Wilkie bookseller of 57 Paternoster Row, with his brother Thomas Wilkie to 1797 and with John Robinson from 1806. Thomas Wilkie published the London Chronicle 1790-1807

Both of the above entries have been coded in GD website to David Wilkie painter DNB 1785-1841 but as they both come in strings of booksellers Godwin was calling on they should clearly belong to George Wilkie bookseller, partner with John Robinson at 57 Paternoster-row (Holdens directory 1811)

Ann daughter of Rev Edward Taylor of Sutton Wilts, Lord of the Manor of Mortlake Surrey, by Anne his wife, sister of William Shippen MP for Saltash. She married in 1752 Edward Willes DNB 1723-1787. His sister Margaret Willes had married Richard Hollings in 1737 and 2ndly Robert Merry in 1750, their son was Robert Merry DNB 1755-1798. Ann Willes' will proved PCC 9.3.1799 with affidavit stating she died on 18.2.1799

Their daughter Mary 1766-1803 married (witnesses Josiah Wedgwood, Jane Willett) 24.12.1787 Peter Holland surgeon 1766-1855 (see their son Henry Holland DNB 1788-1873). The 1809 call was in a string of booksellers Godwin visited so probably a bookseller. From bbti Thomas Williams at 10 Stationer's-court (or Williams & Co hard by it in Ave Maria-lane, in Holdens directory 1811 but not in bbti) were the most likely, Ewan Williams at 11, Strand was a bit further afield There was also a Thomas Williams at 156 Leadenhall-st up until 1809.

This person is identified in GD website but these dates probably belong to him, while 1.11.1794 is unlikely to and 5.6.1797 only mentions his village Welsburn, that Godwin & Montagu drove through early in the morning, without his name. Though Godwin probably didn't see him on this visit, he appeared in Rev John Morley's diary on 1.5.1797, 8.6.1797, 10.6.1797 and 24.7.1797, and a miss Willams was keeping a school in Stratford where Morley's daughter Mary and a miss Harding were boarding.…

Possibly Martha Roper Williams daughter of Robert Williams ("formerly of Charleston South Carolina Counsellor at Law now of London" will PCC 1808). She exhibited at Royal Academy 1793 and lived at 30 Lambs Conduit St, so near to Foulkes'. She married at St Andrew Holborn 16.12.1803 Richard Wrangham merchant (will PCC 1832). Unlikely to be Helen Maria Williams who was probably in France.

I guess that Nt Mt is short for Newport Market, in which case this may have been Mitchell Williams, circulating library and stationer of Castle-st, Newport-market (Holdens directory 1811). Morn Post 25.7.1804 advertised his library at Gt Newport-st, Leicester-sq.  Land Tax 1807 Little Newprt-st. He was baptised 9.3.1778 at St James Westmr.son of Miles & Elizabeth, apprenticed 6.3.1792 to William Beresford of Stationers Coy son of Miles Williams deceased late of Marylebone for a premium of 100 gns. One of the proprietors of the Telegraph newspaper, along with John King, Charles Este, George Robinson & David Evans Macdonnell, all of whom were present on the first occasion and all except Robinson on the other two. Said in newspapers to be a half-pay ensign, which fits with a John Williamson ensign of 18th foot, listed in army half-pay from 1783 to 1808

This may have referred to Willis's coffee house, or to Charles Willis (qv) who first appeared in the diary on 16.7.1797, or to Willis Webb (qv), as Godwin had met a Webb earlier the same day (it seems unlikely Godwin would use his first name although he may have referred to him as Willis on 25.6.1788 when Webb was his pupil - or that may have been someone of the surname Willis)
