C H A Gallean duc de Gadagne was a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1763. No doubt French emigres of that family, likely to be impoverished if regulars of John King's

Gore

Gore 29.12.1799 at Lanesborough's / 19.1.1800 again / 21.1.1800 Goire at John King's

An Irish landed family, from Hist of Irish Parliament there was John Gore 1735+-1814, Hon Richard Gore 1735/40 - 1807 (this one perhaps the best candidate for dinner at King's as his estate was hard-pressed), William Gore 1744-1815, and William Gore 1767-1832. Edward Gore was custos brevium at £600 p.a. from 1782-1800. Francis Gore was Lt Governor of Grenada 1791. Boyle's Court Guide of 1800 had Thomas Gore 6 Queen St Mayfair / Miss Gore 17 Lower Brook St / Christopher Gore Esq 20 Cumberland Place,…

George Forbes 1760-1837 6th Earl Granard (his will PCC 1837 general, died at Paris, his stepmother (d.1820) married Rev Samuel Little) married 10.5.1779 Lady Selina Frances Rawdon, 4th dau of John…

Hardcastle

Hardcastle 8.1.1797 at John King's

Maybe the attorney John Hardcastle, 1787 with Michael Hodgson over the Crown Office, Kings Bench Walk, Temple, 1800 at 7 Lincolns Inn New Sq, Morning Chronicle 2.3.1801 advert for creditors of his estate. In 1797 Law List there was also an attorney James Hardcastle of 21 Dean St Soho. In Godwin diary after Dennet who was also likely an attorney

See also Joseph Hardcastle DNB 1752-1819 his will PCC 1819, he married 1785 Anne dau of John Corsbie (see Barnard)

Hardkus

Hardkus 27.10.1798 at John King's

Careful examination of Godwin's manuscript diary suggests this may have been Hardkers. I've found no instances of the name Hardkus in any sources but the name Hardker can be found occasionally in the north of England and in USA, possibly a variant of Hardaker. But I've not found any person of that name who might have been referred to here, in the plural.

Hewerdine, William

30.11.1793 Hewardine at Wrights and 11.7.1794 at Mrs Jennings and 2.5.1797 at King's, with Swainson. In Godwin's 1796 list (crossed out) for 1793 and in 1794 version.

William Hewardine 1763-99 songwriter (Highfill, Burnim & Langhans). His song satirising patriots in Public Advertiser 24.5.1792. He often sang at Anacreontic Society with Dignum who was at Wrights with him in 1793. He was often anti-radical and sang at Hood's election dinners but according to Pryse Lockhart Gordon's Personal Memoirs (vol 1 p249, 262 vol 2 p 372-4) he did this only for money and was a 'double-tailed…

Holmes

Holmes 26.3.1800 at King's / 18.7.1800 Holmes at Drennan's (in Ireland). In Godwin's 1796 list for 1800 / 8.7.1803 vote for Holmes,postman / 5.1.1817 Holmes at Stewart's (with Pinfold) / 2.3.1817 again / 1.6.1817 again / 1.6.1824 Holmes at Lamb's / 4.9.1824 again / 2.12.1827 Holmes at Kenney's / 24.8.1834 Holmes at Caunter's

The Holmes in Ireland in 1800 whom Godwin included in his 1796 list was probably Robert Holmes DNB 1765-1859. Less likely would have been Peter Holmes Esq of Merrion St Dublin (Hist Irish Parl 1731-1802) pro-Union MP though subscr to D R O'Conor 1798 pro-…

Hompesch

Hompesch 17.11.1799 at John King's. In Godwin's 1796 list for 1799

Probably Charles Theodore Joseph Anton Baron Hompesch (will PCC 1812 formerly of Bollheim Westphalia but late of Rosenau, Datchet, Bucks, Lt General in British Service) of the Hungarian nobility. Served in Trinidad and St Domingo 1797 where his regiment of hussars was reduced by fever from 1100 to 300 men. His 2nd batallion sailed from Cowes to Cork 13.4.1798. On 4.7.1801 he took part in a sailing match on the Thames. Lived at Nine Elms, Battersea Fields where his natural only daughter shot herself July 1801, having…

Housselaer

Housselaer 26.4.1795 at King's, 21.9.1795 there, 19.10.1795 adv at theatre, 9.11.1795 at King's, 3.12.1795 there

This was quite likely Godwin's mis-spelling of Haussoullier (sometimes spelt Haussoulier). See work notes below for similar names from the Low Countries, perhaps this was a French variant. At any rate Haussoulier was a very interesting character and a likely guest at John King's table. Notes & Queries Jan to June 1863 p 91 gave no sources but the facts check out well with records, saying he was a French Jew and fortune-hunter who married the wrong lady by mistake. The…

Johnson, clerk of arraigns

adv Johnson 23.1.1795 at John King's / Johnson clerk of arr 30.1.1795 there / adv Johnson 19.2.1795 there

The three entries above have been wrongly coded in GD website to Joseph Johnson. See my entry for Johnson, Richard

Kaines

10.2.1795 at King's / 27.3.1795 at Geralds (with King) / 1.4.1795 Godwin meets him before dining at King's. In Godwin's 1796 list for 1795, inserted above with King's other guests G Rogers, Anderson & Davis.

I found a Henry Kaines butcher of Dukes Shore, Limehouse, will PCC 1801, and a Thomas Kaines of St Marylebone buried 24.10.1827 age 65 at Countess of Huntingdon's Chapel, Spa Fields but no good reason it should be either of them except that the name is rare. Looked at variants Kanes, Caines, Canes and Keynes with no more luck

Kelly

Kelly 8.6.1800 at John King's / 5.8.1800 (in Ireland at Wallace's trial) hear Barrington: int. Kelly. M Kelly in Godwin's 1796 list for 1800 / 9.12.1801 theatre adv mrs Inchbald (mrs Martyr, Hooke & Kelly) / 21.1.1803 mrs Kelly at Nicholson's & 3 Smiths / 20.1.1805 E Kelly at Nicholson's & 3 Smiths / 25.7.1835 RR & Kelly call

The first entry above at King's might be Michael Kelly DNB 1762-1826 singer and composer, but there's no particular reason to think so. I would suggest John Francis Kelly an army officer noted in the Reminiscences of Rees Howell Gronow DNB 1794-…

Kendillon, Robert

3.9.1795 at John King's / 23.9.1795 there / 26.4.1798 there

See Trial of Robert Kindillon, natural son of the Earl of Belvidere, for a rape on the body of Miss Elizabeth Egan, Dublin 14.12.1789. She was catholic, he protestant, Sheridan prosecuted, Curran defended. Kendillon was acquitted.

Major Robert Kendillon of 53 Norton St buried St Marylebone 22.4.1830 age 76. His will PCC 1830 Robert Kindillon
