Joseph Hume DNB 1767-1844. Mentioned 540 times in Godwin's diary, only exceeded by Godwin's second wife, his two children, James Marshall, Thomas Holcroft, Charles Lamb, Thomas Turner, David Booth and John Fenwick. The DNB knows very little about him and most of their article concerns a practical joke he and Lamb played on William Hazlitt. He was born 9.4.1764 in Bishopsgate Street, London son of John Hume and Sarah Weatherly, who had been married on 14.3.1758 at St Augustine Watling St, London as bachelor and spinster. The births of their three children John, Ann and Joseph were registered at Dr Williams Library on 22.5.1770. Sarah Weatherly was born 27.5.1733 eldest child of Rev John Weatherly and Sarah Jeffries who were married in 1732 at All Hallows the Great, London. John Hume was buried at Bunhill Fields on 30.9.1803 age 69. His mention in newspapers at his death called him late of the Victualling Office, which is where his son Joseph Hume worked. The will PCC 1803 of John Hume Esq. mentioned his wife Sophia and his two children Ann and Joseph. I could find no record of the death of his first wife or his marriage to Sophia, but the will PCC 1816 of Sophia Hume left to Joseph Hume of the Victualling Office, Somerset House, a small black profile of his father. Sophia's maiden name was Wills and she came from Bristol or Devon.

For details of Joseph Hume's children see my entry on Corney, Miss.
