Jupp

HCR diary 25.12.1823 at Sam: Kent's "the whole Jupp family - Mr J: rather a low joker, but still a sensible man - very religious but yet remarkably coarse in his conversation - with a tendency to freedom of talk on sexual matters before his own sons. Three of them - two forward striplings - one a young architect - also 4 daughters - a fine family on the whole - Mrs J: was sighing all the day - it amounted nearly to groaning - for the loss of a favourite daughter two years ago!!"....."The whole Jupp family tremendous Irvingites"

An ad in the Morning Chronicle of 4.8.1823 listed subscriptions towards building a new Scotch Church by the congregation of Edward Irving (DNB 1792-1834), which is an excellent source for "Irvingites". In 1823 Irving was new and suddenly very fashionable in London so the list may contain many who were short term enthusiasts. Along with James Ward (DNB 1769-1859), Samuel Rogers (DNB 1763-1855) and Basil Montagu (DNB 1770-1851), there were C R, Henry and Richd Saml Jupp, three of the sons of Richard Webb Jupp (DNB 1767-1852) and his wife Sarah, daughter of the Rev Dr Morgan Jones of Hammersmith. They were married on 16.5.1793 and Richard Samuel was baptised 17.6.1794, Henry Morgan on 27.10.1795 and Charles Robert on 13.2.1798 all at Bull Lane Independent Chapel, Stepney. The youngest son Edward Basil Jupp (DNB 1812-1877) would have been 11 years old and the next youngest, Alfred John, 20 years old, when Robinson made the comment above. Charles Robert and Henry Morgan were married in 1826 and Richard Samuel not till 1852
