GODWIN DIARY

7.5.1808 dine at Thetford: meet Lofft, 4½ miles: tea at Troston; adv. Chas. Finch: sleep / 9.5.1808 escort C Finch to Bury, w. S L / 10.5.1808 Troston Heath, w. S L: congé: Bury, w. C & A L / 11.5.1808 Euston, w. S L / 12.5.1808 Bury, w. C L

S L was probably Capel Lofft's wife Sarah (though it could have been her 5 year old daughter Sarah), C L was probably Lofft himself and not his two year old son Capel, and A L was probably Lofft's daughter Anne 1788-1884 who didn't marry till 1826. The congé (goodbye) is odd - if it was with S L, Godwin saw her again the next day. Godwin had met Lofft in Thetford and stayed several days at Lofft's place, Troston Hall, which may have been a blessed rest for him (less than twice a year on average did Godwin note "sleep" without an "at"). Troston is halfway between Thetford and Bury, and Euston is halfway between Troston and Thetford.
