Probably William 1769-1801 son of James Mathews bookseller and medicine vendor of the Strand and brother of actor Charles DNB 1776-1835. At Cambridge BA 1791 where he was Wordsworth's most intimate friend, admitted Middle Temple 1793, called to bar 1796, parliamentary reporter for World, Oracle and Telegraph and died in Tobago 1801. William Johnston (The Hidden Wordsworth) assumed that 25.3.1795 & 31.3.1795 Wordsworth & M call, referred to Mathews, but M was more likely to have been James Marshall who happened to call twice on the same day as Wordsworth. In fact Wordsworth and Mathews only called together once, when Godwin was out, and Godwin never saw them together, though he supped at Montagu's with Wordswoth and Stoddart the night before seeing Mathews 20.6.1796 at Stoddart's
