Richard Lee [QV] escaped to Hamburg January 1796 allegedly with Powell's wife (not sure of source of this - Place?) and about that time Thomas Evans allegedly stayed at Powell's (I McCalman, Radical Underworld p23 & note 68).
Arrested but 'escaped' on 18.4.1798 at a meeting of United Englishmen and was hidden by Francis Place who made him a suit of military clothes and sent him to Harwich "with the young woman who passed as his wife". He sailed to Hamburg from Yarmouth end of April 1798. While based on continent he made several visits to London (Nat Arch PC 1/3490 20.5.1800 to bring letters from Bailey). To Paris from London Dec 1801 to take Alexander Galloway's letter to Richard Hodgson (?if he went as entrusted) Nat Arch PC 1/3535.
