John Russell DNB 1786-1863 asst master Charterhouse 1806-11 ordained priest 1810 headmaster of Charterhouse 1811-1832. See his letter to Godwin Bodleian Abinger c11 f73 dated 18.11.1811. According to DNB William Godwin 1803-1832 (Godwin's son) he attended Charterhouse as a dayboy 1811-1814. The firat entry above when Godwin called on Matthew Raine, then headmaster of Charterhouse and Russell was assistant master seems very probably him. The next 5 entries could have been him or perhaps another Russell (see my entries for Russell and Russell, William)., on the last two of these I included the calls of two of Godwin's brothers in case this was more than coincidence. The next 9 calls were very likely him, particularly where C House or C H was specified. The last entry above "seek Russel & Watkn" could also be the headmaster, perhaps elsewhere for August holidays, as on 5.10.1810 Godwin noted "call on Raine adv Watkinson". See my entry for. Watkinson who was an assistant master (like perhaps Walpole in the first entry above)
