Perhaps John Dennis 1779-1864 father of George Dennis DNB 1814-1898 archaeologist. John Dennis was "of the Excise Office" (SunFire 1807) and was Receiver General of Excise by 1845. Morning Chronicle 12.8.1820 "Views in Savoy, Switzerland and on the Rhine from drawings made on the spot, By John Dennis, etched by himself, and engraved in Mezzotinto by C Turner, W Ward and other eminent Engravers". I think this was him as it was the sort of thing his son George later did, see DNB. John Dennis was son of George Dennis (will PCC 1810) of Redmans-row, Mile End, and his wife Caroletta (née Ravenscroft). They were members of the Stepney Independent Meeting House and Dennis was treasurer of its charity school. His father Augustine and grandfather Valentine (will PCC 1805) were farmers and brewers in Wells, Norfolk. John Dennis married Mary Susanna Hull of Exeter in 1809 and they had several daughters, one of whom may have been the miss Denis at Hume's, but Dennis is a common name.
