HCR diary 29.4.1826 "calls - On Mr Jaffray a new acquaintance who is a student of German - and he and his wife readers of poetry"
11.7.1834 "to the Opera House where in the Concert Room was the performance - There came into Mrs Jaffray's box Mrs Masquerier and Mrs Aders and Miss Riley - 2 friends of Mrs J: were there"
26.4.1836 "I called on Mrs Aders - they are going to remove and board with Alderson near the Jaffrays"
6.5.1836 Mrs Aders "is very desirous to be acquainted with the Jaffrays"
27.6.1836 "I wrote however before I went out to Mrs Jaffray telling her what Mrs A: had said about her calling on her"
28.6.1836 "I went to Mrs Jaffray and I did a good-natured act - or rather found I had done a useful friendly act in writing to Mrs J: about Mrs Aders - she had begun a letter to me saying she should instantly call on Mrs A: - In my letter I informed Mrs J: that Mrs A: had asked whether she should call on Mrs J: - Mrs J having intimated a wish that she should do so - but Mrs J: had forgot that she had said this. I explained all this in a letter to Mrs J: and she very kindly called with me on Mrs A: so that an acquaintance is formed which will be mutually agreeable. I shall have contributed to Mrs A's comfort especially by this. I read Dupin at Mrs Jaffray's while she dressed and went with her to Mrs Aders where we did not stay long - Mrs J: had seen Mrs A: at the Italian concert some years ago"
4.7.1836 "called on Aders - I found them quite pleased with Mrs Jaffray with whom they rode out. This will be to both parties a very agreeable acquaintance - a useful introduction of mine"
11.7.1836 "at Mrs Jaffrays and with her at Mrs Aders - a party - This party gave me no pleasure, and has, perhaps unreasonably, displeased me - At least the inviting Mrs J: (J: himself was engaged at dinner) Mrs A: asked whether she should ask Mrs J: to a blue stocking party and said she expected Mrs Jameson etc - I thought Mrs J would like to see any person of literary name and Mrs A: in consequence invited Mrs J: but in such terms as to lead Mrs J: to suppose there would only be a few friends and she went in a morning dress - In fact there were perhaps 30 people crowded in a very small room"..... "Mrs J went at 11 and I, after accompanying her home, returned and stayed till past one"
24.9.1836 "I read in the papers today Aders has become a bkpt. This troubles me - I was not prepared for this and I am entirely at a loss to account for it"...Mr Jaffray "pointed this out to me and we talked about it on our walk - He urges me not to be drawn into a liberality that is not called for - When he failed before 2 years ago I gave him £200 - I could do the same again, if I felt as I did towards him and Mrs A: but I am forced with pain to confess to my self that since, various circumstances have led me to doubt their worth. Her sincerity I doubt - Mr J: says that Mrs J: has been displeased with the fulsome compliments of her notes - I have often felt her conduct toward me liable to the imputation of gross flattery. I am unwilling to doubt his sincerity yet he never satisfied me as to the cause of his failure before or rather his being so much in debt"
21.10.1836 "I took tea with the Jaffrays. Mrs J: has called on Mrs Aders. That is kind - I told her of Mrs A's project but I do not expect any aid from them nor have I a right to expect anything"
1.11.1836 Jaffray "I believe designedly omitted asking anything about the Aders - so that I could not introduce the subject to him"
9.11.1836 letter to Jaffray "I thought it necessary distinctly to say that I knew nothing of the affairs of A: when I requested Mrs J: to call. This has annoyed me for I ought to have foreseen what has taken place - I expressed my increased esteem and regard to Mrs J: for her prompt kindness in calling - I mentioned Turner's offer to lend me money for A: and tell the story of Wedgwoods loan to Godwin"
23.12.1836 "I then took tea with the Jaffrays and from thence to Aders"
12.1.1837 "took tea with the Jaffrays"
24.1.1837 chat with Mrs Jaffray "about Mrs A: - she is quite indignant at her silence and now makes no secret of her conceiving from the first a bad opinion of her - A: actually forced on Mrs J: an edition of Schiller for 30/- and in other respects indelicately spelled for contributions - I am sorry to say this no longer surprises me"
1.2.1837 at Jaffray's talking about Aders' affairs "Thay approve of my letter but their approbation is not an assurance so strong as my own conviction tho' I am the actor"
6.3.1839 "time passed at Jaffrays and Aders"....."I went to Aders after tea - an uncomfortable call - I lost my temper and was to blame"
17.7.1841 "called on Mrs Aders - Jaffray walked on while I went in and I afterwards joined him and we returned by China Row. I had a kind reception from Mrs A:. Neither too much nor too little gratitude"
The Mrs Jameson expected at the bluestocking party (11.7.1836) was Anna Brownell Jameson (DNB 1794-1860).
