Probably Samuel Parr's godson and pupil the Rev William Phillips of Ealing Hants mentioned in his will and in the diary of Rev John Morley (see Morley, John) as a pupil of Parr's in May 1797. He matriculated Trinity College Oxford 6.11.1797 age 19.  His father William Phillips (c.1752 - 1828) was notorious as "the inventor of illegal insurance in the lottery", and ran a high-class gambling den at his house at 40 Pall Mall. He was said to have been acquitted of highway robbery at York when a young man and, when rich, to have atoned for his past follies by charitable works (Hull Packet 30.12..1828 & Morning Chronicle 22.12.1828). He was mentioned in Parr's will and two of his sons were Parr's godsons and became clergymen. He was also Joseph Gerrald's guardian while Gerrald was at Parr's school at Stanmore (Warren Derry, Dr Samuel Parr the Whig Dr Johnson) and corresponded with Gerrald at the time of his transportation (Bodl MS Eng Misc c 396 e). He was married three times, his third wife Mary Jane Abbiss spinster he married on 21.1.1815 at St Luke Chelsea, witnesses John Abbiss and GWH Parker both of whom feature in his will (PCC 1829). Phillips senior may have been the Philips at Lanesborough's 19.1.1800 and at John King's 26.1.1800 and 9.2.1800
