John Philpot Curran (DNB 1750-1817) seems to have had a number of mistresses in his life, see my entries for Hughes, Maria, for Dixon (mrs Dixon) and for W Place (mrs Fitzgerald). Godwin sometimes used initials for convenience, but particularly for children, and also for women, perhaps especially when mentioning their name was a socially delicate matter. They could also have been abbreviations for some politically sensitive subject. For possible identity of C M, see Mercier, Charlotte. Godwin later sometimes used H S to refer to Harriet Shelley but she was only 9 in 1806
