I could find no Theobald brokers and few bill brokers at all in trades directories of those years. Many more appeared in bankruptcy notices and reports of litigation. Bill broking may have been a sideline for other tradesmen but to be legal you had to be sworn at City Hall. Holdens directory 1811: Theobald & Brettle, smiths, 8 Counter-st Borough / Daniel Theobald bootmaker Leicester-sq / James Theobald hat manufacturer Dean-st, Soho / John Theobald hosier 11 Skinner-st / John Theobald charcoal dealer Bowling Green-pl Marylebone / Theobald & Wilkinson wine & brandy merchants Haymarket. Note that the hosier lived in the same street as Godwin. He frequently between 1813 and 1839 insured houses there and in Pickett-st Strand, the two streets where houses were prizes in the City Lottery (as was 41 Skinner-st where Godwin lived)
