10.5.1793 &c. Has now been given person record on GD website since I researched him but 5.11.1798 missed
A soldier serving in India who called on Godwin perhaps paying him to write for him. Godwin wrote to Maj White on 10.5.1793, which may not have been him as his promotion to Major was in 1798, though officers on half pay were often given the honour of one extra rank. Then Maj White called on 20.7.1798, 25.10.1798, 29.10.1798, 9.11.1798, 11.11.1798 and 13.11.1798. On 23.1.1799 Godwin called on him, then he called on 28.1.1799, 9.2.1799, 21.2.1799, 25.4.1799, 9.7.1799, 18.10.1799, 20.10.1799, 24.10.1799 and 14.12.1799. Godwin met him on 22.12.1799, then he called on 30.12.1799, 16.4.1800, 21.4.1800, 13.5.1800, and 8.9.1800. Godwin met him on 16.11.1800, he called on 3.12.1800 and 28.1.1801, then Godwin dined with him on 30.1.1801, as he was about to depart for India. Then on 7.6.1809 Godwin met Col White, who called on 8.6.1809, 14.7.1809, 17.7.1809, 18.7.1809, 14.11.1809, 7.5.1810 and 9.7.1810. He returned to India again and was promoted Major General in 1812. Then on 14.2.14 Godwin met Gen White, he called on 17.2.1814 and 18.2.1814, on 20.2.1814 he was at tea, on 21.2.1814 Godwin wrote 4 pages for him and then he called. Godwin wrote to him on 1.3.1814, and he called on 2.3.1814 and 3.3.1814. Godwin wrote to him on 5.4.1814, met him on 3.7.1814, and he called on 12.7.1815 and 13.1.1815. On 15.1.1815 Godwin wrote a memorial for H White, 5 pages, then H White called on 5.7.1815 and 11.11.1815. He retired from Army service and was made KCG or KCB in 1815. On 16.11.1815 Godwin met Sir H White, and on 18.11.1815 H White called. Less certain is 3.6.1816 'H White sups', and the meetings at Lamb's and Hazlitt's in 1817 and 1818 seem more likely to apply to Thomas Holt White. White the soldier had never socialised with Godwin's friends. He died at Bath 7.11.1822 and left substantial wealth to relatives and friends (Nat Arch PROB11/1667, Dict Indian Biog, C E Buckland)
