Some of the above Henry entries may have referred to a christian name rather than a surname. // Thomas Henry DNB 1734-1816 or his son William Henry DNB 1774-1838 both Manchester chemists, may have been the Henry (of Manchester) at Johnson's in 1804, but could equally, were it not for the 1796 list, have been the Henry at Davy's in 1802 and the Henry at Johnson's in 1800. There was also Alexander Henry 1783-1862 brought up in Philadelphia who returned to Manchester in 1804, became a Unitarian and was later Radical MP for Lancashire South 1847-1852 and father of Mitchell Henry DNB 1826-1910. And also (without a Manchester connection) Alexander Henry 1766-1841 merchant of Finsbury-sq whose children were born 1800 to 1804, whose wife Maia died in 1809, who was bankrupt in 1811, who was buried in Bunhill Fields and who may have been the Alexander Henry Esq author of Rolando A Romance published in 1820 // I haven't been able to identify Capt Henry of 1806 yet // L Henry at Lansdown's in 1801 was clearly Henry Petty Fitzmaurice DNB 1780-1863. // For Henry of 14.5.1820 see Holcroft, Henry. // Mrs Pilcher with Henry twice in June 1820 were Mrs Godwin's sister Sophia Elizabeth (nee de Vial) who married Edward Paul Pilcher captain 32nd foot (1763-1826) at Crediton, Devon on 25.1.1792 and her son Henry Incledon Pilcher who was baptised 17.2.1799 at Barnstaple Devon, married Eliza Bradley, emigrated to Australia and died there in 1845. He wrote to Godwin 10.10.1820 (Bodleian Abinger c12 f75-6) after Godwin's visit to his family home in Rochester 5.9.1820. He also appeared in Godwin's diary as H Pilcher on other occasions and perhaps later as plain Pilcher. //  "Henry & C Hopwood dine" in 1810, the only C Hopwood in Godwin's diary. The other Hopwoods in the diary were W, Jas, J,  H, E, M, F & P. See James Hopwood DNB 1745x54-1819 and his sons William and James in the same article. The children of James Hopwood senior and his wife Elizabeth baptised at Campsall nr Doncaster included Mary 1786, Fanny 1787, Elizabeth 1788, Hannah 1793, Jane 1794, James 1795, William Wardell 1796 and Martha bapt 1798 at Islington. No C or P Hopwood baptism found yet but Charles Hopwood of Harmood St was buried 4.11.1843 at St Pancras age 38. In the 1841 census Charles Hopwood age 36 was living in Harmood-st with Elizabeth Hopwood age 80 and Edward Hopwood age 7. In the 1851 census William Hopwood engraver age 63 born nr Doncaster was living in Harmood-st with his son Charles age 17. In Pigot's 1827 directory Charles Hopwood professor of music was at the same address as William Hopwood engraver.  The will PCC 1853 of William Hopwood engraver was proved by his sister Martha wife of Robert Wm Eastwick. From the Royal Academy exhibits it seems that the brothers William Hopwood and James Hopwood junior were both at 28 Paradise Row in 1801-4 and Miss Hannah Hopwood of Latham Pl Somers Town and then 12 Devonshire St Queen St exhibited from 1811-1817. Hannah Hopwood married John Robertson at St Pancras in 1826. But no sign of Henry or P Hopwood outside Godwin's diary, and the Charles Hopwood born 1805 would have been only 5 when Henry and C Hopwood dined with Godwin. The Henry of 30.12.1810 doesn't look like a christian name // The Henry at Robinson's in 1828 was probably Henry Joshua son of Joshua & Rosetta Robinson born 23.10.1801 bapt 22.4.1802 St Marylebone, his father married Rosetta Tomlins at St Marylebone 7.11.1799. They had a large family (Charles James 1800 Henry 1802 Alfred 1804 Isabella 1804 Emily 1807 Julia 1807 George 1808 Charles Barrington 1815 Ellen 1815 Julian 1818 Louisa 1818 Elisa 1818 Rosa 1818 - these are baptism dates). Julia, E,L & R all appeared in the diary usually at Godwin's daughter Mary Shelley's, but Henry seems to have been the only son referred to in the diary, and I haven't found any reference to a Harold in the family, so Harold (and indeed Henry) might have been a surname - this was the only (non-fictional) Harold who featured in the whole of Godwin's diary
