George William Erving of Massachusetts appointed consul at London by Thomas Jefferson (Maryland Gazette 6.8.1801 Morning Post 27.8.1801) arrived from New York 21.9.1801, his father George Erving had been a loyalist in American War of Independence and now lived at 32 Gt George St, Hanover Sq (his will PCC 1806 witnessed by John Singleton Copley DNB 1738-1815 or his son of same name). Godwin wrote to G W Erving on 21.12.1803 (Shelley and His Circle SC56). He was appointed secretary of legation at Madrid 29.11.1804 but was unable to arrive there till early 1806, he was minister to Denmark 1811 and to Spain 1816. He died in 1850. See The Liberator 25.10.1844 for his connection with John Quincy Adams. The Irving of three entries in 1810 was quite likely Peter Irving 1772-1838 Amer Nat Biog, brother of Washington Irving, who came to England around that time, though he was mostly based in Liverpool. Cooper and Swartwout were both American connections. The GD website has coded all Irving entries after 1819 to Washington Irving, except for 29.6.1823 which it has assigned idiosyncratically using an event tag instead of a person record to Edward Irving DNB 1792-1834
