Master Betty (William Betty DNB 1791-1874) made his first appearance on the London stage on 1.12.1804 at Covent Garden, which Godwin and the Rowans attended, Godwin went to see the second performance, again as Achmet in Barbarossa, on 3.12.1804, and his first performance at Drury Lane as Young Norval in Douglas on 8.12.1804. Betty was known as the young Roscius, and had already achieved fame in Belfast , Dublin and other provincial theatres. A Mrs Hoskin, widow of Charles J Hoskin was manageress of the Capel Street theatre in Dublin (Highfill, Burnim & Langhans) and was last heard of acting in Derry in 1799. The plural Bettys in 19.12.1805 when the young actor read Godwin's play Faulkener and turned the part down, could have included his father William Henry Betty (died 1811) or more likely his mother Mary nee Stanton (?will PCC 1838), who was reported in newspapers as having given birth to a daughter (Lancaster Gazette 13.10.1804) and of being with and managing her actor son (Bury & Norwich Post 29.8.1804, Morning Chronicle 18.10.1804).
