HCR diary 6.1.1822 Mrs Basil Montagu "related to me a romantic incident in the life of Mrs Ponsford - She was a painter by profession and painted many years ago a picture of her Mrs A" (Robinson clearly means Mrs M) "and a child - it was entitled "A Widow and her Child". This picture caught the eye of a rich woman - a Mrs Clarke - who was possessed independently of her husband of £15,000 - which she was resolved he should not have. Mrs C: instantly determined to give this £15,000 to the widow - and for that purpose called on the artist Miss Smith. She told Miss S: only that she wished to see the widow (then Mrs Skipper) and Mrs S: wrote to her to come to London to see Mrs Clarke which she neglected to do. Then Mrs C: becoming attached to Miss Smith, gave her the £15,000 and at the same time hearing that there had been an acquaintance between her and Mr Ponsford (then a Mrs Smith) brought about a marriage between them!!!"

27.6.1823 Mrs Aders about her brother in law Longdill's orphaned children "Mrs Clarke, the lady who gave Mrs P: her fortune, gives up a debt of some hundreds of pounds to the children"

26.10.1823 at Aders "Mrs Clarke the generous patroness of Mrs Pauncefort" (the Pauncefotes not there)

See my background article "3 Wives, 3 Husbands Living". Ponsford should be Pauncefote and Skipper should be Skepper
