William Rough (DNB 1772/3-1838). Given that Rough was appointed Chief Justice of Ceylon in March 1836 and knighted in 1837 it is difficult to see, without looking closer at Crabb Robinson's diary again, what his disappointment about not being Chief Justice was in October 1836. Mrs Kay's father was William Porden (DNB 1755-1822) and Rough had left England for 5 years in 1816. Miss Rough may have been one of his daughters Helena Hester born 1804 (married as spinster St Marylebone 4.10.1849 David Anderson Blair), Harriet Joanna born 1808(?), or Amelia Mary born 1812, or perhaps a sister of his
