9.3.1809 theatre; adv. (Walpoles & Pole)
When Godwin uses brackets it generally means saw but didn't speak to, as with celebrities at the theatre. William Wellesley-Pole DNB 1763-1845 brother of the future Duke of Wellington, was probably Pole. Walpoles may have been two MPs, Horatio Walpole History of Parliament 1783-1858, and his uncle George Walpole History of Parliament 1758-1835. Horatio's father Horatio had just become Earl of Orford on his father's death and handed over the seat of King's Lynn to his son. Godwin was usually aware of titles and would have called the father Orford. Neither his brother nor his son were married at the time.
