Sir James Edward Smith DNB 1759-1828. Deacon of Octagon congregation. Born in Norwich and his family lived there, didn't move back there from London till 1796 after his father's death, but gave a course of 18 lectures on zoology & botany there in summer 1794 (C B Jewson, Jacobin City p,137, 155). His father James Smith Unitarian and merchant (will PCC 1795) was probably the Mr Smith at Alderson's and some of his family again at Gurney's. His brothers were Francis b1764, John Frederick b1765, Richard b1768 and James William b1773, his sisters were Frances b1767, Sarah Maria b1770, Esther Anne b1773 and Frances Julia b1777. Sarah Maria Smith was possibly the only one of his sisters to be unmarried in 1805 so may have been the Miss Smith of 8.9.1805 (see my entry for Smith, Canon). Not sure that J E Smith was the first entry above (at Wedgwood's) so other possibles below.
UBD 1791 Dr J C Smyth physician extraordinary to the KIng, Charlotte St, Bloomsbury (see Gray, James) / Dr Hugh Smith Bridge St Blackfriars (Hugh Smith doctors PCC wills 1784 of Hemel Hempstead, 1789 of Hatton St, 1791 of Stratford Essex)
Boyle's 1792 Dr Smyth 12 Charles St, Middlesex hospital / Dr Smith 12 Great Marlborough St / Dr Smith Deans Yard Westminster
In SCI minutes for 7.12.1792 Dr Smith was asked to leave as he had not been a member for some years. Mr John Rae was not allowed to speak to the matter and resigned the next week after William Sturch proposed a motion to have him expelled. Oddly there never seems to have been an SCI member called Dr Smith, the only Smiths (or Smyths) in the SCI being Samuel Smith of Clapham, his son William Smith DNB 1756-1835, and William Smith of Sunderland-wick, nr Beverley, Yorks
