Hewerdine, William

30.11.1793 Hewardine at Wrights and 11.7.1794 at Mrs Jennings and 2.5.1797 at King's, with Swainson. In Godwin's 1796 list (crossed out) for 1793 and in 1794 version.

William Hewardine 1763-99 songwriter (Highfill, Burnim & Langhans). His song satirising patriots in Public Advertiser 24.5.1792. He often sang at Anacreontic Society with Dignum who was at Wrights with him in 1793. He was often anti-radical and sang at Hood's election dinners but according to Pryse Lockhart Gordon's Personal Memoirs (vol 1 p249, 262 vol 2 p 372-4) he did this only for money and was a 'double-tailed…

Hewitt, Dr

dr Hewit & son 7.2.1805 at Wake's

The only medical doctor Hewitts I found were Thomas who died 1794 and Cornwallis who only got his MD in 1822. There were several surgeons, but this was more probably Alexander Hewat DNB 1738/9?-1824? who began his career as a minister in South Carolina came to London in 1777. in 1797 his sermon The Obligations of Christians to Avoid War was published. He married  Mrs Eliza Barksdale at St Marylebone on 16.9.1798, and she died in 1814. His will PCC 1824 Alexander Hewat DD of Gt Quebec St Marylebone mentioned no children

Hewlett, John

27.9.1788

In Godwin's 1796 list for 1788 (crossed out) and in 1794 version. GD website has a person record for him but the 1796 list entry is not coded to it.

John Hewlett DNB 1762-1844. The DNB states that he ran a school at Shackleford, Surrey. As he appeared in newspapers (e.g. Times 18.1.1800) as keeping a school in Shacklewell this looks like DNB's mistake rather than Godwin's. Shacklewell was near Hackney, Middlesex. The GD website event tag wrongly states reference unclear on 27.9.1788 T.C. goes to Shacklewell, when it is explained in John Hewlett's person record. The…

Higgins

Higgins 25.7.1800 at Hamilton's

GD website has coded this entry to Godfrey Higgins DNB 1773-1833 but I couldn't see any Irish connection for this Yorkshire squire. Perhaps Francis Higgins DNB 1746-1802 owner of Freeman's Journal, Dublin & informer, or William Higgins DNB 1763?-1825 chemist, in Dublin from 1791. Subscrs 1798 to D E O'Conor Matthew H missionary Limavaddy co. Hill's study

Hill's study 30.9.1801 / 1.10.1801 Fillingham's study

These entries surely referred to Thomas Hill DNB 1760-1840 and his friend William Fillingham, but the GD website has left Hill as inidentified, and coded Fillingham to te 1301, an unidentified text, although it has a person record for both of them. As they were both book collectors, study may have referred to rooms in their houses, but more probably to amateur sketches of Godwin, the sort of fun they might have enjoyed

Luntley (qv) was a surveyor at 62 Shoreditch, not far from Primrose Street where Godwin was managing property for the sisters of his first wife Mary Wollstonecraft. A James Hill and a Samuel Brooks (qv) both appeared in the ratebooks for Primrose St in 1803 and 1806, though as far as I can tell neither was a tenant of the…

Hill, Robert

Robert Hill Esq of Bear Binder Lane proposed Society for Constitutional Information 26.2.1790 by Benjamin Cooper 2nded Richard Sharp

Proposed along with John Hemming (QV*) but I've found no record of a Robert Hill in connection with Bearbinder Lane or John Hemming, and Robert Hill is quite a common name. The will PCC 24.4.1795 dated 20.9.1791 of Robert Hill merchant of Fenchurch St yielded no relevant clues but mentioned his friend James Wollstonecraft (the brother of Mary Wollstonecraft?) commanding the brig Miriam on a voyage to the South Seas
