Daughter of Thomas Barker of Penkridge, Staffs who married Mary Homfray otp at Wishaw 25.11.1773. Barker, Sarah

In Ann Godwin's letter of 1796 (Abinger c.14 f112) she said of her son Joseph "his aunt Barker is a kept miss to Mr H Hall" and she said much the same in 1805 (Abinger c.9 f26). The context of both letters suggest that aunt Barker was not living in London. Thomas Barker married Sarah Jex at Kettlestone, Norfolk on 29.7.1777. Sarah, daughter of Robert & Mary Jex was baptised at St John Sepulchre Norwich on 1.6.1760, so she was probably 4 years younger than her niece Mary (see Godwin, Mary). In 1805 Thomas Barker brought a suit in Chancery against Mark Butcher and others (Nat Arch C13/75…

Barlow, Joel

Barlow 4.5.1803 at Joseph Johnson's / 27.7.1803 again / 1.6.1805 Barlow at Philips

The GD website has coded these entries to Joel Barlow DNB 1754-1812. In the editorial notes to his person record it says that the diary (i.e. Godwin's diary) suggests that he returned to America via London. The DNB says he had returned to America by August 1805 so the timing is possible, but it could certainly have been another person called Barlow. Since most guests at Johnson's and Phillips' were authors I can only find John Barlow "teacher of languages geography and the globes" whose poem on the…

The entries above are ones the GD website has left uncoded. Mrs W Barnard may have been the matriarch of the family, Mary nee Corsbie widow of William Barnard 1711-1788. She died in 1801. Her sons were John b1744, Samuel b1752, Wiilliam 1754-1828 and Thomas 1757-1833. William may have been the William Barnard who married Elizabeth Slater at Sutton Strawless in 1776 and/or the one who married…

Barrale, Miss

30.7.1795 miss Barrale at King's (possibly the same person as miss Bannal at King's 3.12.1795)

Judging by results on Ancestry website, the name Barrale was rare in England at that time, more common in France. But one strange anomaly is, there are quite a number of Barrale entries on Ancestry in the censuses of 1841, 1851 &c but absolutely none in the Death Registration Indexes.

One entry in the 1841 census could be the person at King's in 1795. Amy Barrale age 75 of 6 Palmers Almhouses, St Margaret's Westminster sharing her household with Trevanion Kelly, schoolmistress…
