Walstein

Walstein 26.1.1800 at John King's

German regiment of Walstein to West Indies (Telegraph 13.8.1796). Count Walstein in Fashionable News (Morning Post 23.4.1805 & others 1806 -7). Ferdinand Ernst Graf Waldstein 1762-1823 was in English military service from about 1795 till 1805 and remained in England for some years afterwards, best known as a composer and patron of music to whom Beethoven dedicated a sonata (Constant von Wurzbach, Biographisches Lexikon vol 51-2 p 231). He acted in private theatricals with the family of the ambassador Count Starhemberg at Twickenham in 1802 and…

Ward, William (lord Dudley)

23.3.1795 lord Dudley at Bosville's / 23.9.1795 Dudley at King's / 4.10.1811 meet B Dudley / 28.12.1820 adv L Dudley Stuart at Nash's / 23.6.1823 letter for Mackintosh (L Dudley), 1827/8 calls & letters L Dudley. (Dudley in Godwin's 1796 list for 1795 but place in sequence implies the Dudley at King's, who was perhaps the B Dudley 0f 1811)

William Ward, 3rd Viscount Dudley & Ward 1750 - 25.4.1823, married 1780 William Bosville's sister Julia. See Female Jockey Club p151

Their son John William Ward (DNB 1781-1833) born 9.8.1781 became 4th Viscount 1823, Foreign…

Williamson, John

GODWIN DIARY: 9.11.1795 at John King's / 18.3.1796 there / 16.5.1796 there. In Godwin's 1796 list for 1795

One of the proprietors of the Telegraph newspaper, along with John King, Charles Este, George Robinson & David Evans Macdonnell, all of whom were present on the first occasion and all except Robinson on the other two. Said in newspapers to be a half-pay ensign, which fits with a John Williamson ensign of 18th foot, listed in army half-pay from 1783 to 1808

SOCIETY FOR CONSTITUTIONAL INFORMATION: John Williamson of Field Court, Grays Inn proposed member 23.11.1792 by…

Wilson, Mrs

10.2.1795 mrs Wilson at King's / 22.3.1795 again / 1.6.1795 meet (after King's, with Mrs Morse)  / 3.12.1795 adv at King's / 26.1.1805 Barry & mrs Wilson adv at Carlisle's / 28.10.1806 adv at Carlisle's / 14.4.1813 Godwin calls on mrs Wilson

No reason to suppose the mrs W at King's to be the same as mrs W at Carlisle's 10 years later, but they could all be Bonne Wilson (nee Boileau) died Feb 1819 who married at Madras 1780 Lestock Wilson (died 1821) captain in East India Company's service, friend of Joseph Farington and appeared often in Farington diary. The Morses and the…

Wolcot, John

In Godwin's 1796 list for 1787, crossed out and inserted above in 1792, also in 1794 version for 1787. The crossed out Wolcot in the 1796 list is not coded to his person record on the GD website.

John Wolcot DNB 1738-1819. I presume (though it is pure speculation) that Godwin moved Wolcot in the list because he had met him in 1787 but had not conversed with him. I think this was the only entry in the 1796 list that got moved further than within a year or to the next year.

Wood, James

Wood 8.6.1800 at John King's / 11.1.1801 Wood calls / 10.5.1801 again / 19.5.1801 sups / 7.6.1801 calls / 14.6.1801 again / 28.6.1801 again / 12.7.1801 again / 19.7.1801 Wood (talk of Home & Lumsden) calls / 27.7.1801 call on Wood / 15.8.1801 Wood calls / 18.8.1801 sups / 6.9.1801 at tea / 25.9.1801 calls / 21.10.1801 sups / 1.11.1801 calls / 8.11.1801 dines / 22.11.1801 calls / 29.11.1801 again / 6.12.1801 again / 27.12.1801 again / 19.1.1802 again / 7.2.1802 again / 6.3.1802 again / 14.3.1802 Wood & Campbell call / 23.3.1802 Wood dines / 18.4.1802 again / 30.4.1802 Wood &…

Wright

Wright 8.4.1796 adv at King's / 2.12.1807 call on Wright / 4.12.1807 again / 6.9.1808 again (in Newbury)  / 7.11.1808 Wright cpp calls / dine at Collier's w. Wright / 8.8.1812 tea Collier's, w. Wright

I suspect five different Wrights in the above entries. For 1796 at King's I have no suggestions. For the two entries two days apart in 1807 I considered Henry Wright attorney of Paper-bldgs Temple partner to Thomas Nelson Pickering, because a Pickering also appeared in the list of calls on 3.12.1807, 4.12.1807 and 5.12.1807. However on 4.12.1807 they both appeared but separated by…
