Miller, Patrick

23.5.1796 Miller at Debrett's

The editorial notes on Miller in the GD website consider a number of Millers, so I'm just making things more complicated by pointing out that there is another Miller likely to have been at Debrett's and perhaps also at James Mackintosh's on 2.3.1795 and Fox's funeral on 10.10.1806. Patrick Miller (d1845 History of Parliament) MP for Dumfriesshire 1790-6 was the son of the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Scotland, He was a steward at the dinner of the Friends of Freedom on 4.2.1795 celebrating the treason trial acquittals, voted with Fox's patriotic…

Miller, Walter

The GD website has a person record for Miller and has lumped all Millers together but tried to distinguish them in the editorial notes. This entry is just to provide more info on Walter Miller of Perth. He died 19.3.1819 at Perth of asthma aged 63 years. Godwin recorded his death

Walter Miller ironmonger married Mary Young at Glasgow in 1786. Their children John b.1787, Walter b.1789, Jean b.1791, James b.1792, Mary b.1797, George b.1800 d.1855, Elizabeth b.1802, all born at Perth

Mills 15.6.1790 at Timothy Hollis' / 18.3.1796 & 4.2.1797 at Debrett's bookshop / 5.8.1800 Mills at Wallace's trial, Carlow

these have been coded in Godwin Diary website to Alfred Mills draughtsman which seems very unlikely

see Hist of Parl for the brothers William and Charles Mills and for George Galway Mills, all MPs in the 1800s with Whigish connections but none of them very ardent Whigs or dissenters.

Milton

Milton 24.12.1799 at Lanesborough's / 19.1.1800 again

If Godwin deferentially placed the aristocrats first (Milton is followed by Landaff (qv) & Laval (qv)) this may have been a Lord Milton. But the only possibles I could find were Charles Fitzwilliam, Viscount Milton DNB 1786-1857 who was probably too young to be at this dinner, and George Damer, d.1808 who had earlier been styled Lord Milton but in 1798 had succeeded to the Earldom of Dorchester. He had no sons and his heir would have been his brother Lionel but I'm not sure if a brother would use such a courtesy title. In…

1801 at Nicholson's may have been John Mitchell DNB 1785-1859 army officer and writer, as the DNB states "In 1801 he was sent to a mathematical school in London taught by a Mr Nicholson".

1831 was probably Henry Armstrong Mitchell 1799-1854 publisher of the…

Mitford

Mitford 12.8.1801 at Reynolds', North Cray

Outside possibility George Mitford 1760-1842 of Bertram House, Reading in his daughter's DNB article Mary Russell Mitford 1787-1855.

Eliza Fenwick was then working as a governess for the Mocattas (I. Grundy, intro. to Secresy). See DNB for Mocatta family.

Moffat, William

Moffat 31.12.1793 at Thelwals / 28.1.1794 at Muir's / 26.1.1801 at Charles Lamb's (probably a different Moffat).

William Moffat, Edinburgh solicitor (Nat Arch TS11/956/3501). A letter from Maurice Margarot in Edinburgh to the London Corresponding Society received 26.12.1793 introduced the bearer William Moffatt (Thale) so he had only been in London a week when Godwin met him. Private agent for Muir and Palmer (Barrell & Mee, Treason Trials vol 5). William Moffatt of Charles St, Edinburgh was the Edinburgh office of the Courier newspaper 1799-1800

Moir

In 1794 version of Godwin's 1796 list for 1784, left out of 1796 list / 14.12.1796 Moir at House of Commons (Austrian Subsidy)

Probably the Rev John Moir (see D Rivers, Literary memoirs of Living Authors p 51 (1798) who said he was "supposed to have been concerned in some of the newspapers") curate and rector of St Dionis Backchurch, supposed to have written a life of C J Fox in 1783 (also ascribed to a Mr Laurence) but his work "Preventive Policy" was said to be of quite conservative views. Morning Chronicle 22.11.1823 said Thomas Erskine when briefly Lord Chancellor presented Moir…

Moira

9.7.1800 dine at la. Moira's / 11.7.1800 call on Moira / 24.7.1800 again / 1.8.1800 call on la. Moira / 9.8.1800 dine at la. Moira's / 13.4.1808 Countess of Moira dies / 28.11.1826 Hastings dies

The two calls on Moira in Dublin were between two dinners at La. Moira's. Otherwise Godwin only recorded their deaths, using the name Hastings for Lord Moira. It is possible that Moira in 1800 referred to Lady Moira and that Godwin never met Lord Moira. See Francis Hastings DNB 1754-1826 and Elizabeth Rawdon DNB 1731-1808.
