Hoole, Samuel
9.2.1790 Hoole at Miss Williams. In 1796 list for 1790, and in 1794 version.
John Hoole (DNB 1727-1803) or his son Samuel (DNB 1758-1839)
9.2.1790 Hoole at Miss Williams. In 1796 list for 1790, and in 1794 version.
John Hoole (DNB 1727-1803) or his son Samuel (DNB 1758-1839)
Otley 2.1.1790 at Holcroft's & 31.3.1790, 1.9.1790, 5.4.1791, 7.7.1791 there; 5.11.1791 at his; 6.7.1792 at Holcroft's; 11.11.1815 at Knowles'; 30.6.1834 Godwin calls on
Otley appeared 7 times between 1790 and 1792 always with Holcroft and mostly with known musicians (Clementi, Shield, Bosse). On 6.7.1792 Godwin listed 8 guests at Holcroft's and added 'quartets' - all the other 7 can be shown to be professional or amateur musicians which suggests Otley was a musician too
Mr & Mrs Jones 17.1.1790 at Mrs Webb's / 20.4.1790 again / 25.12.1791 again / 18.12.1791 call on Mrs Jones / 18.10.1792 write to Mr Jones
This first set of Jones entries in Godwin's diary all seem to refer to one couple, friends of the Webbs. They may just possibly be Arthur Jones (died 1794) linen draper of Bath and his wife, whose daughters appear often later in the diary (see Jones, Louisa & Jones, Margaret). The Webbs were Bristol merchants trading to the West Indies.
9.2.1790 Cadogan at Miss Williams.
Bernard 8.1.1790 at Timothy Hollis' / 25.5.1800 Bernard at John King's
29.1.1790 Eudora.
A tragedy by William Hayley performed at Covent Garden that day.
Moon (female) 18.12.1789 at miss Williams'
2.1.1790 hear Bishop at Holcroft's / 7.7.1791 again. Given Holcroft's many musical guests and the phrase 'hear Bishop' this may have been Henry Bishop, dancing master and violinist (see below) rather than listening to a bishop's sermon as suggested by the event tag (although Godwin earlier noted 'see bishop Newton' and 'hear bishop Horsley' both times he used a small b). Aickin the actor and Otley who was often at Holcroft's musical gatherings were perhaps less likely to go hear a sermon - and the second 'hear Bishop' was with Clementi, Shield & Bossy, all musicians.
20.11.1789 Rousseau talk of with Robinson. Surely Jean-Jacques Rousseau 1712-1778
7.2.1804 call on Johnson (Rousseau). Godwin was reading Rousseau on 4.2.1804 and on 8.2.1804
20.11.1789 Peysonnel talk of with Robinson.
Probably Charles Peysonnel 1727-90 French consul in Smyrna and colleague of Condorcet as writer (though others of his family also enjoyed some fame)
