The first two West entries above in 1807 might have been an attorney, as Godwin was perhaps active in helping his friend William Nicholson who got out of debtor's prison on 5.12.1807 after seven months…

Westminster Forum

8.12.1795 W Forum / 31.5.1798 Westminster Forum: duelling, adv M(arshall) & Montagu

Westminster Forum debating society. The subject om 8.12.1795 was "Are not the most probable means left of saving the country from the despotism of the Minister - an immediate junction of the Whig Interest and the Corresponding Society?" The debate was not concluded that night and Godwin doesn't seem to have bothered to return.

Weston, Penelope Sophia

26.10.1788 Weston at Miss Williams' / 27.10.1788 again / 7.1.1789 again / 14.9.1789 again / 11.3.1791 again. Was in 1794 version of Godwin's 1796 list but left out of 1796 version and Baillie later inserted above in same place in list (see Baillie, Matthew)

Penelope Sophia Weston 1752-1827 daughter of Edward Weston a merchant of Worcester who married Mary Jordan of Ludlow, he died in 1765, his will (PCC) mentioned wife Mary, son Joseph and daughter Penelope, and property in Richards Castle, Ludlow. Whaley

Whaley 5.8.1800 adv at dinner, Carlow  In Godwin's 1796 list for 1800 / 6.8.1800 dines / 8.8.1800 at Burne's

Thomas Whaley DNB 1766-1800 politician and gambler, pro-union, married Jan 1800 sister of Valentine Browne Lawless, Lord Cloncurry DNB 1773-1853, died 2.11.1800 in Cheshire on way to London. See Bodleian Abinger c6 f36v for Godwin's description of him in a letter to James Marshall

Wharton, John

19.5.1793 Seward, Knight, Goring, Wathen at Tooke's / 1.11.1794 Wharton at Hardy's trial.

Although Wathen could have been Jonathan Wathen, noncomformist surgeon of Walbrook, or Josiah Iles Wathen, special pleader Middle Temple, Wharton came (inserted above the line) directly after Seward and Goring in 1793 in Godwin's 1796 list, so this was very likely John Wharton (History of Parliament) 1765-1843. Wharton also appeared twice in the 1796 list for 1794, both times crossed out, and neither time coded to John Wharton's person record in GD website. In the 1794 version of the 1796 list…

Wheatley, Mrs

mrs Wheatley 17.9.1802 at Perry's / 18.9.1802 again / 17.10.1807 dine at Perry's, w. Popes

This was probably the widow of Francis Wheatley DNB 1747-1801 who later (25.6.1807) married Alexander Pope DNB 1763-1835, she appears in DNB as Clara Maria Pope 1767-1838 (nee Leigh)

Wheble

30.9.1809 call on Wheble

John Wheble bookseller 18 Warwick-sq Newgate-st. 1745-1820, had been a newspaper printer and owner. Not far from Skinner-st. Only mention in Godwin's diary

Anna Doyle Wheeler DNB 1785?-1848. The dates fit with her times in London from the DNB article. The Wheeler at Lady Caroline Lamb's does not have a feminine title, but Godwin often dropped it especially for independent-minded women. It could also have been Mrs Wheeler's daughter Rosina, as Edward Bulwer Lytton was present and would propose to her the next month,…

Wheeler, Thomas

15.2.1808 call on Wheeler (B Hosp)

Thomas Wheeler buried 11.8.1847 Norwood Cemetery aged 93 from Newcastle Court, College Hill. 1775 freedom of Apothecaries Co. Probably the TW who married Ann Blatch sp 24.6.1789 St Pancras. 1801 candidate for apothecary to St Barts in place of Mr Roberts, had been assistant apothecary there for 17 years, address Bolt Court, Fleet St. Retired as apothecary to St Barts 1822. 1841 census Gracechurch St. Will PCC 1847 of St Bartholomews Hospital mentions six sons Thomas Lowe, Charles West, William Lowe, James Lowe, Lowe & Joseph.

Wheler, Miss

miss Wheler 3.11.1805 at Rowan's

Perhaps Charlotte or Penelope daughters of Edward Wheler will PCC 1785 brother of Rev Charles Wheler 7th bart. 1730-1821. Charlotte died unmarried in 1861 and Penelope married Charles John Craven in 1817. Their cousin the 8th bart Trevor Wheler 1763-1830 married Harriet dau of Richard Beresford of Ashbourne, Derbys in 1792 but I couldn't find any connection between the Beresfords of Ashbourne and Benjamin Beresford from Bewdley, Worcs who married Hamilton Rowan's sister (see my entry for Beresford). Trevor Wheler 8th bart had 5 sisters including…

Whishaw, John

28.12.1796 Wishaw at Tooke's / 17.11.1814 at Lady Mackintosh's / 7.1.1815 invited C M's with R Sharp & Wishaw / 11.1.1815 at Mackintosh's

Probably the barrister and equity draftsman John Whishaw 1765-1840 , later known as "the Pope of Holland House", a Whig fixer and executor of Samuel Romilly's will in 1818. His letters are much quoted in History of Parliament but there seems to be no biographical notice of him in any reference works but I found something on the net at www.turtlebunbury.com and a book "The Pope of Holland House" by…

White

In Godwin's 1796 list for 1780 and also in the 1794 version, between Munnings and Harmer. There is a person record in GD website for 'generic' White but the entry in the 1796 list has not been coded to it. 22.1.1789 White (after Warton and before Kippis) at Robinson's / 24.1.1789 White (after Warton and before Kippis) at Hamilton's / no more for 3 years

I have done some research on the White entries in Godwin's diary but I'm still some way from identifying them all, I will probably add to this entry later but for now I'll discuss who the White in 1780 and the White in 1789 might…

White

11.8.1810 Guildhall; Tabart, White &c / 20.8.1810 Examination of sir R(ichard) P(hillips); White &c / 21.8.1810 Guildhall; Tabart, White &c

These entries are coded on GD website to a generic White person record. While the other White entries in 1810 and adjacent years may all belong to James White DNB 1775-1820, these three entries were likely a creditor or friend of Benjamin Tabart whose bankruptcy proceedings they were part of. This could have been James White in his business as newspaper agent or perhaps a friend of Tabart's, but some other possibles were John White (…

White, Anthony

Ant. White 25.6.1833 calls

Seems very likely to be the surgeon (DNB 1781-1849). For example on 18.3.1835 Godwin calls on him ", confined one week". Though the DNB doesnt mention his wife, his will (Nat Arch PROB11/2090) mentions the portrait "of my late dear wife". (This portrait was said to have won George Dawe his election to the Royal Academy). Though Godwin dined or supped 4 times at Ant White's where Geo White was present each time, they were not brothers. James White of Isleworth was born at Richmond in 1771 and his brother George at Richmond in 1785, children of James and…

White, Henry

10.5.1793 &c. Has now been given person record on GD website since I researched him but 5.11.1798 missed

A soldier serving in India who called on Godwin perhaps paying him to write for him. Godwin wrote to Maj White on 10.5.1793, which may not have been him as his promotion to Major was in 1798, though officers on half pay were often given the honour of one extra rank. Then Maj White called on 20.7.1798, 25.10.1798, 29.10.1798, 9.11.1798, 11.11.1798 and 13.11.1798. On 23.1.1799 Godwin called on him, then he called on 28.1.1799, 9.2.1799, 21.2.1799, 25.4.1799, 9.7.1799, 18.10.…

White, James

miss White 18.1.1801 at Charles Lamb's / 18.2.1801 White at Lamb's / 4.3.1801 again / 18.5.1801 at his with Lamb

Miss White was perhaps a sister of Lamb's friend James White DNB 1775-1820 who was probably the White of the next entries above, and many later ones. (The GD website has different Whites coded to one generic person record White). He was born in Bewdley, Worcs and his siblings may have been Joseph b1772, Sarah b1777 & Polly b1779. Polly may have been a Margaret White who died 1864. Lamb also mentioned the Whites of Bishopsgate St in a letter to Barron Field of 1820.…
