A-Z of Entries

Barlow, Joel

Barlow 4.5.1803 at Joseph Johnson's / 27.7.1803 again / 1.6.1805 Barlow at Philips

The GD website has coded these entries to Joel Barlow DNB 1754-1812. In the editorial notes to his person record it says that the diary (i.e. Godwin's diary) suggests that he returned to America via London. The DNB says he had returned to America by August 1805 so the timing is possible, but it could certainly have been another person called Barlow. Since most guests at Johnson's and Phillips' were authors I can only find John Barlow "teacher of languages geography and the globes" whose poem on the…

Barlow, Ruth

Mrs Barlow and 26.5.93 and 6.6.93. Perhaps wife of Joel Barlow DNB 1754-1812 who went to France late in 1792 but she may have stayed behind at first, nee Ruth Baldwin (died 1818)

Barnard

5.7.1794 S & T Barnard at Alderson's / 8.7.1796 mrs W Barnard at J Taylor's / 11.7.1796 W B at Barnard's / 12.7.1796 (call on) WB with A / 8.9.1805 miss T Barnard calls  (all in Norwich)

The entries above are ones the GD website has left uncoded. Mrs W Barnard may have been the matriarch of the family, Mary nee Corsbie widow of William Barnard 1711-1788. She died in 1801. Her sons were John b1744, Samuel b1752, Wiilliam 1754-1828 and Thomas 1757-1833. William may have been the William Barnard who married Elizabeth Slater at Sutton Strawless in 1776 and/or the one who married…

Barnet

Barnet 26.3.1800 at John King's / 11.7.1800 (in Ireland) adv Scully & Barnet at Moira's / 25.4.1828 Barnet at C Jones's / 10.10.1828 again / 10.1.1831 invited to C Jones's

The Barnet at King's may have been Edward Barnet because in 1812 Augustus Butler Danvers instituted Chancery proceedings against an Edward Barnet (National Archives C13/207/21). Danvers was engaged in Chancery suits with a number of the guests at his father-in-law John King's, these may have been "friendly" suits. Boyle's 1800 Edward Barnet 27 Soho Sq & Kensington Gore, Law List 1800 attorney of Soho Sq.…

Barney

Baron

Baron 11.3.1795 at Bosville's

Barrale, Miss

30.7.1795 miss Barrale at King's (possibly the same person as miss Bannal at King's 3.12.1795)

Judging by results on Ancestry website, the name Barrale was rare in England at that time, more common in France. But one strange anomaly is, there are quite a number of Barrale entries on Ancestry in the censuses of 1841, 1851 &c but absolutely none in the Death Registration Indexes.

One entry in the 1841 census could be the person at King's in 1795. Amy Barrale age 75 of 6 Palmers Almhouses, St Margaret's Westminster sharing her household with Trevanion Kelly, schoolmistress…

Barret

Barret 13.7.1800 calls (in Ireland) / 7.8.1807 Barret, constable at Skinner Street (Godwin's) / 6.10.1809 write to Barret / 24.1.1810 write to Barrat / 4.4.1810 again / 5.12.1810 again / 15.7.1811 again / 5.8.1813 Barrets call / 21.9.1828 Jos. Barret at (Joshua) Robinson's / 10.4.1829 Barret at (Joshua) Robinson's

The first entry above 1800 in Ireland was possibly John Barrett DNB 1753/4 -1821 classical scholar and eccentric. (John Barrett of the Theatre Royal, Crow St, Dublin  = June 1806 miss Devereux, Aungier St, Dublin. Edward Deane Barrett attorney of Dublin = May 1811 dau of…

Barret, constable

7.8.1807 lock at S(kinner) S(treet); adv. T(homas) T(urner) & Barret, constable, 3 Hodgkinses

I haven't found any mention of a constable called Barrett or Barret around this time

Barrow, Isaac

20.5.1792

Barrow's mathematical lectures should be added to te0179 (5.7.92)

Barrow, Richard

Barrow 16.7.1794 at Newgate.

I suggest this was the surgeon Richard Barrow who was probably visiting a fellow medic (see Hodgson, William) and was shortly afterwards confined in Newgate himself, along with Robert Watson, for libels to excite rebellion, based on an incident at Miller's cookshop, Smithfield on 23.8.94. The criminal register gives his age as 24 and describes him as an apothecary of Stratton Ground, Westminster, 5ft 7ins, grey eyes, dark brown hair, sallow complexion. An advert in the Telegraph of 19.9.95 says he "recently commenced parctice", and the Whitehall Evening…

Barry

7.4.1810 Barry calls (not seen) / 30.4.1810 Barry calls / 14.8.1833 call on Barry &c

Up until the death of James Barry DNB 1741-1806 the GD website has coded plain Barry entries to him, and col. Barry entries to Henry Barry DNB 1749/50-1822, who lived in Bath. Godwin wrote to Henry Barry in 1809. The first two entries above could have been to Henry, if he was on a visit to London.

Barry, Henry

19.1.1789 Barry

Should be Major Henry, not James. Boyles Court Guide 1792 gives his address as 14 James St Westminster and checking his neighbours with the ratebooks confirms this is James St near Buckingham Gate
31.8.1792 Barry 'veut acheter'. More likely the major than the painter if he had the money to buy whatever Godwin and/or Holcroft wanted to sell

Barthelemon

Barthelemis 14.1.1802 at Fenwick's (& Plumptres, Fells)

Surely Francois Hippolyte Barthelemon DNB 1741-1808. He lived at Vauxhall not far from the Fenwicks. In the context of other plural names the misspelling still suggests some of his family were present. His first wife died in 1799 and his daughter Cecilia DNB 1767-1859 had married Edward Prentis Henslow in 1797, though she may have still been known by her stage name to Godwin. Barthelemon married secondly on 4.4.1802 Sarah Ray of Kingsland, Hackney. By this time he was a Swedenborgian and his two children by her were…
