Rutherford, William

Calls on Godwin 15.9.1818, identified by Godwin's letter to his wife as 'of Barbadoes' (Abinger c.42 f139). This was William Rutherford who married Eliza Ann Fenwick at St Michael Barbadoes on 29.8.1812. He was the son of Thomas Rutherford, a Methodist minister 1752-1806 (will Nat Arch PROB11/1450) and his wife Isabella (will Nat Arch PROB11/1602). Wishing to become an actor, he crossed the ocean in order not to embarrass his parents. His father had been a 'sort of a ward' of Eliza Fenwick's father Peter Jaco, also a Methodist minister (I.Grundy, intro.

Mocatta

30.12.1811 Godwin sees Mocatta at theatre with E Fenwick and her son Orlando.

Eliza Fenwick was then working as a governess for the Mocattas (I. Grundy, intro. to Secresy). See DNB for Mocatta family.

 

Fenwick, Thomas James

Brother of John Fenwick. The bankruptcy announcement in the London Gazette of 1803 said Thomas James Fenwick, linen draper of Penzance. Thomas James Fenwick, tailor and slop-seller of Fore St, St Anne Limehouse, appeared in 1825 and 1829 in Old Bailey proceedings (oldbaileyonline, t18250519-55 & t18290115-42). John Fenwick, abode Limehouse age 65 yrs was buried at St Anne Limehouse on 21.12.1823, shortly after Godwin noted his death.

GODWIN DIARY 14.4.1803

Son of Thomas Holcroft and his fourth wife Louisa, he was born on 9.1.1803, married Catherine North at St Marylebone on 9.1.1825, and appeared in the 1841 census living at Nassau St, Soho age 36 Man of Letters with Elizabeth Holcroft age 32 (presumably his second wife). 22.11.1818, 31.1.1819, 12.4.1819 and 31.5.1819 should be added to his dates. Godwin noted him over 50 times between his first marriage and Godwin's death but no sign of Godwin's having met Thomas's wife
