Howe, John

Submitted by edpope on

In Godwins 1796 list for 1777, in 1794 version under 1778 and then changed to 1777.

John Howe DNB 1754-1804 eccentric. In Godwin's autobiographical notes (Bodleian Library microfilm Duke MF 1975) he wrote "Lowestoft - Howe - painful solitude". According to the DNB Howe moved from Wiltshire to Ipswich in 1776.

Evans, Richard

Submitted by edpope on

In Godwin's 1796 list for 1774, added in smaller letters, not in 1794 version

In Godwin's autobiographical notes (Bodleian Library microfilm Duke MF 75) he wrote "metaphysical correspondence with Evans" which comes after "Lowestoft - Howe" and so the correspondence dated to 1777. The nearest Richard Evans, by date, in the Surman Index lived 1737-1824 and was minister at Appledore Devon from 1759-1819 so this one may have been his son

In Godwin's 1796 list for 1773 but not in 1794 version. Person record in GD website but 1796 list entry not coded to it.

George Cadogan Morgan DNB 1754-1795 .Studied at Hoxton 1772-6. Godwin's autobiographical notes (Bodleian library Duke MF 75) listed GCMorgan among his friends at Hoxton (see Gregson, A) and also mentioned "crabbedness of GCM"

Jocelyn, Conyers

Submitted by edpope on

Godwin's diary Vol VII f 46v the first name in the 1796 list, Jocelyn. In the 1794 version Sir C Jocelyn

Conyers Jocelyn, of Hyde Hall Sawbridgeworth, baronet and Doctor of Medicine, died unmarried 1778 when the baronetcy went to his cousin and merged into the Earldom of Roden, see Burke's Peerage which wrongly gives his date of death as 1771. William Godwin's younger brother was christened Conyers Jocelyn Godwin on 8.1.1761. Godwin seems to have stayed at Hyde Hall on his way to London in 1773

Lyttelton, George

Submitted by edpope on

Godwin's diary Vol VII f 46r: Lyttleton had mrs Robinson's premices. M

George Lyttelton DNB 1709-1773 and Mary Robinson DNB 1756?1758? - 1800. The DNB article notes Mrs Robinson's addresses, 14 St James Place 1792-7, but then a series of other London addresses as her financial situation worsened. Careful research could probably establish this connection but I don't have time at present. See Andrews, Francis

Andrews, Francis

Submitted by edpope on

Godwin's diary Vol VII f 46r: M P Andrews, Lyttleton's Moloch, a letcherous old miser. M.

Francis Andrews 1718-1774 (A History of the Irish Parliament) fits the bill, in some people's views. There were no MPs with surname Andrews in English Parliament in 1754 - 1820. George Lyttelton DNB 1709-1773 would seem to be the likely author, but I can find no instance of Moloch in his works. M could be James Marshall or Basil Montagu among others

Reynolds, Frederick

Submitted by edpope on

f 46r of Vol VII of Godwin's diary; Reynolds & yg Colman chums at Westmr. F R

see Frederick Reynolds DNB 1764-1841 where it is stated that George Colman the younger DNB 1762-1836 befriended him at Westminster school, but the F R implies that Reynolds told Godwin this himself. See Martindale, Henry
