Belhaven, Lady

21.08.1796 la. Belhaven adv at Holcroft's

William Hamilton who called himself Lord Belhaven voted as a Scottish peer for the election of Scottish peers to the House of Lords but his vote was declared invalid in 1793. His distant cousin William Hamilton of Wishaw laid claim to the title in 1795 and it was allowed by the House of Lords in 1799. The claim succeeded because he was descended from a younger brother of the original noble, while the failed claimant was descended from an older brother, and such was the custom in Scotland. The rejected claimant wrote a will dated 15.5.1795…

In Godwin's 1796 list for 1794 but this entry not coded to his person record in GD website, nor is the 1798 entry. In 1794 version of 1796, then in 1796 version crossed out and (presumably subsequently) inserted above

William Beloe DNB 1758-1817. Interesting in light of his conservative politics, editor of the British Critic from 1793. There may have been other Beloes in Norwich but  the fact he was in 1796 list and later talked of, tends to confirm the identity with this…

Belsunce, Comte de

11.1.1796 at King's Belzunce (wrongly transcribed in GD website as Bebzunce) / 28.2.1797 at King's Belzance (wrongly transcribed in GD website as Bebzance)  In Godwin's 1796 list for 1796

Probably Antonin Louis de Belsunce de Castelmoron born 1741 (Dictionnaire de Biographie Francaise) which says he emigrated in 1791 and then loses track of him, while the Dictionnaire de la Noblesse Francaise says he died in 1770. True Briton of 10.8.1797 Comte Belzunce French emigre died at Falmouth a few days since as he was about to join his emigrant corps at St Domingo. An English newspaper said…

Benjer, Miss

miss Benjer 13.7.1804 at Joyce's / 19.12.1811 miss Benjer at Coleridge's lecture

These two entries should be added in the GD website to the person record of Elizabeth Ogilvy Benjer DNB 1775-1827. The Benjers of the 16.6.1803 entry, which is coded to her, perhaps also included her mother Mary. The first entry on GD website was to Benjers on 16.6.1803 and the plural probably included her mother Elizabeth Benger widow who outlived her and proved her will on 14.3.1827 as universal legatee

Perhaps Richard Newton Bennett Dict Irish Biog 1769-1836. The 1820 entry was with the Beresfords, connections of Hamilton Rowan so quite likely the same Bennet as with Curran. H G Bennet in the last two entries was probably Henry Grey Bennet DNB 1777-1836 politician. Other Bennets in Ireland in 1800 were James Bennet MD of Cork subscr to Cervantes…
