M'Donald 9.11.1795 see MacDonnell, David Evans

Macan, Thomas Townley

M'Can 7.8.1793 at Frost's Newgate.

Thomas Townley Macan (1770-93) from Dublin had been law student at Lincolns Inn but was confined for debt, then imprisoned in Newgate for 3 years from 16.7.1792 for a conspiracy to blow up the Kings Bench prison along with another Irishman Rev Richard Burgh, and Capt John Cummings, John Davis and John Bourne (Nat Arch HO42/21/142 & TS11/780). On 3.11.1793 the Public Advertiser reported his death in Newgate, of the same bout of gaol fever that killed Lord George Gordon.

Macdonard

Macdonard 30.9.1794 see MacDonnell, David Evans

MacDonnell, David Evans

30.9.1794 Macdonard adv. at Gerald's. Very likely the same person who first appeared as Macdonald adv. at Frost's Newgate on 7.8.1793 and was in Godwin's 1796 list immediately after C Pigot, (whom Godwin also first met that day), as Macdonald with the 'ald' crossed out and 'nel' inserted above and then crossed out and Macdonald also crossed right through. Macdonald appeared again at Tooke's acquittal 1.11.1794 and adv. at Gerald's 12.3.1795. In my view this was David Evans MacDonnel who was editor of the Gazetteer newspaper from June 1793 to Dec 1794 and then became editor of the Telegraph…

Macleod

(Macleod expected) 29.7.1800 at Grattan's

GD website has coded this to Norman Macleod DNB 1754-1801 citing the DNB that he went on a jaunt to Ireland in 1800, which failed to lift his spirits. The only other Macleod I found in Ireland in work notes below

MacMahon

MacMahon 2.6.1800 at Mary Robinson's / 14.9.1805 McMahon at Curran's

Probably John Macmahon DNB 1754-1817 at about this time became public relations man to the Prince of Wales, whose former mistress was Mary Robinson

Martin of Galway

Martin of Galway 13.1.1802 at Wycombe's with Curran. In Godwin's 1796 list for 1802 / 10.7.1810 Martin calls

Pretty clearly Richard Martin Hist of Parl 1754-1834, though no reason to think he was the caller of 1810 (see also Martin). On my way to identifying him I came across Nicholas Martin of Ross, Galway died 1811 (Burke's Irish Families) who may have been the Nicholas Martin Esq who stood in the pillory opposite the Royal Exchange Dublin, pursuant to his sentence (Morning Post 20.10.1803) which must have been in connection with the 1803 rebellion, but I could reach no Dublin…

May

May 3.5.1789 at Brand Hollis' / Mays 4.2.1797 at John King's with Belfast. Both May & Belfast in Godwin's 1796 list for 1797 / 28.5.1798 mrs May at King's / 7.11.1798 May at King's / 4.1.1807 adv May at King's / 1.3.1807 Mays at King's / 3.3.1807 May at King's / 8.3.1807 again / 29.5.1813 Edgworths May & Trotman call

McCabe

call on McCabe 23.1.1805 / 26.1.1805 call on MacCabe / 20.2.1805 call on McCabe / 16.10.1811 McCabe calls

James McCabe gent insured 13 Primrose St on 1.11.1806. He was probably a lodger in the house of John Smith appraiser (see Smith, John at Joseph Godwin's) who was listed for that house in the rate books from 1800 to 1807. The first and third entries above were in a list of calls that included Godwin's brother Joseph, who seems to have assisted Godwin in mamaging the Primrose Street houses, and in the first case Edward Ball (see Ball), another of the tenants. McCabe was perhaps…

Mcgrain v Armstrong

K B, Mcgrain v. Armstrong 8.7.1800 / 12.7.1800 Macgray (at Curran's?)

Perhaps John Warneford Armstrong Dict Irish Biog 1770-1858 noted for his active suppression amd harsh treatment of rebels and radicals. The only possibility I could find for Mcgrain/Macgray was Dublin Trades 1797 George Magrane hat manufacturer and merchant. K B was presumably Kings Bench. Sadly I don't have easy access to Dublin newspapers which may have covered this case

McKitty

McKitty 12.10.1799 at Curran's

Moira

9.7.1800 dine at la. Moira's / 11.7.1800 call on Moira / 24.7.1800 again / 1.8.1800 call on la. Moira / 9.8.1800 dine at la. Moira's / 13.4.1808 Countess of Moira dies / 28.11.1826 Hastings dies

The two calls on Moira in Dublin were between two dinners at La. Moira's. Otherwise Godwin only recorded their deaths, using the name Hastings for Lord Moira. It is possible that Moira in 1800 referred to Lady Moira and that Godwin never met Lord Moira. See Francis Hastings DNB 1754-1826 and Elizabeth Rawdon DNB 1731-1808.

Moore (Ireland)

Moore 9.7.1800 at Lady Moira's / 12.7.1800 at Curran's / 28.7.1800 Devil's Glen with Lady Mountcashell, Mrs Moore & 2 enfants; dine, with them at Dunran / 5.8.1800 Arthur Moore at Wallace's trial at Carlow / 11.10.1801 Helen & Jane M dine (in Oxford) / 19.11.1801 H & J Moore call / 21.11.1801 C Mountcashel, H, J & miss Wilmot call

The first 2 entries above are coded in the GD website to John Moore DNB 1729=1802 but there's no reason to think he was in Ireland in 1800. Leaving aside those who supported the union with Britain as unlikely to have been at Curran's (…

Mountcashell
