See Cowie for his letter to Godwin dated the day after this call, in which he referred to himself as Mr S and Mr R S. He may have been the Richard Sherman merchant of 1 Scott's Yd Bush Lane, London in 1790, who voted as a freeholder of Bedford for Colhoun & Whitbread in 1790. A Richard Sherman, brewer with Archer Butler at Coal Yard, Drury Lane 1771, tallow chandler Princes St Drury Lane (Sun F 1780) and of Princes St, St Giles i t Fields Land Tax 1798. Smith & Sherman were merchants 1798 St Martin's le Grand, and Land Tax 1798 Friday St, St Matthews…

Shield, Anne

18.12.1791 Mrs Shield and 22.10.1794, 23.10.1794. In his will (PCC 1829) dated 29.6.1826 William Shield DNB 1748/9-1829 left everything to his 'beloved partner whose maiden name was Anne Stokes daughter of James and Mary Stokes late of Marylebone deceased, Mrs Shield upwards of forty years'

16.10.1800 meet (Shd.) / 17.10.1800 (meet Shd.) very possibly William Shield though not clear why in brackets. Only one other name in my website fits Shd (see Sheffield, William Evetts) Godwin's neighbour but he only appeared once in the diary and Godwin had used the abbreviation Shd for Mrs…

Shipley, William Davies

5.1.1789 Shipley at B Hollis' / 7.3.1789 there. Shipley was in 1794 version of Godwin's 1796 list at start of 1789 but left out of 1796 version.

William Davies Shipley DNB 1745-1826 Dean of St Asaph but a defender of dissent, or possibly his uncle William Shipley DNB 1715-1803 but he lived in Maidstone and claimed to have hardly visited London between 1791 and 1796

His father Samuel Shore merchant of Broadfield, Sheffield married  17.10.1734 at Horbury, Yorks, Margaret, dau and heiress of Robert Diggles, merchant of Liverpool. Samuel was born 5.2.1738 and baptised son of Samuel Shore and Margaret 14.2.1738 at Presbyterian Chapel Sheffield. He married  15.3.1759 Urith, dau of Joseph Offley (will PCC 1754 of Norton Hall)…
