Barrow 16.7.1794 at Newgate.

I suggest this was the surgeon Richard Barrow who was probably visiting a fellow medic (see Hodgson, William) and was shortly afterwards confined in Newgate himself, along with Robert Watson, for libels to excite rebellion, based on an incident at Miller's cookshop, Smithfield on 23.8.94. The criminal register gives his age as 24 and describes him as an apothecary of Stratton Ground, Westminster, 5ft 7ins, grey eyes, dark brown hair, sallow complexion. An advert in the Telegraph of 19.9.95 says he "recently commenced parctice", and the Whitehall Evening…

William Barrow DNB 1754-1836 was the master of Soho Academy. On 1.11.1791 T (Thomas Cooper) goes to school and on 13.12.1791 speeches Soho school

Up until the death of James Barry DNB 1741-1806 the GD website has coded plain Barry entries to him, and col. Barry entries to Henry Barry DNB 1749/50-1822, who lived in Bath. Godwin wrote to Henry Barry in 1809. The first two entries above could have been to Henry, if he was on a visit to London.

Should be Major Henry, not James. Boyles Court Guide 1792 gives his address as 14 James St Westminster and checking his neighbours with the ratebooks confirms this is James St near Buckingham Gate
31.8.1792 Barry 'veut acheter'. More likely the major than the painter if he had the money to buy whatever Godwin and/or Holcroft wanted to sell

Barthelemis 14.1.1802 at Fenwick's (& Plumptres, Fells)

Surely Francois Hippolyte Barthelemon DNB 1741-1808. He lived at Vauxhall not far from the Fenwicks. In the context of other plural names the misspelling still suggests some of his family were present. His first wife died in 1799 and his daughter Cecilia DNB 1767-1859 had married Edward Prentis Henslow in 1797, though she may have still been known by her stage name to Godwin. John Bartlam 1771-1823 see Samuel Parr DNB - Parr's pupil/assistant who later becme his companion and amanuensis. Son of Francis Bartlam of Alcester, matric. Merton College, Oxford 1789 age 18, BA 1793. Fellow of Merton and vicar of various parishes. Died 28.2.1823 at Lloyd's, bookseller of Harley St, of apoplectic fit. George Canning's letter journal mentions dining with Bartlam at Lord Boringdon's the previous week on 18.11.94

This is perhaps the wife of Robert Barwell (DNB 1741-1804), who was Catherine nee Coffin (1769-1847) and so the young wife of a rich man. They married in 1785 and in 1786 newspapers reported her as sporting a phaeton and pair at Egham. Her married status is clear from the crossed out entry of 26.10.1788. Waterford died at his residence in Dublin (Leeson St). He was called to bar in 1807 and became chairman of  Waterford 1847

John Pollexfen Bastard (DNB 1756-1816) MP for Devon whose motion concerning the promotion of naval officers was heard in the house of Commons on this day. Although reported in newspapers at the time, no mention of it is found in his entry in History of Parliament

Subscr to Hist & Antiq of Stratford 1806 Mrs B & Thomas B Stratford. EB died 10.11.1812 will PCC 1813 banker, children Sophia & Thomas dated 24.9.1809

mrs Batyy 10.5.1795 at Holcroft's with Amelia Alderson / 17.5.1795 again. Alderson was staying in London with the Battys. No doubt Mrs Batty was present on many other occasions coded to her husband Robert Batty, but these are the only two entries for mrs Batty in Godwin's diary

The second, third and fourth entries above are coded on GD website to Robert Batty DNB 1762/3-1849 physician but there is reason to think these five entries could all have referred to a different Batty. The last entry specified P Street, and John Batty was in the rate books for 12 Primrose Street by 1805.
