21.7.1796 Norris's with Norgate

The will PCC 1796 of James Norris gent of Norwich mentioned his friend Elias Norgate. His burial was at Norwich on 19.7.1796 two days before this entry, His brother the Rev William Norris 1727-98 lived at Wood Norton, close to Dalling where Godwin's family lived, With his wife Susanna (nee Chad, married at Wells , Norfolk 6.6.1758) he had at least 4 sons and 2 daughters. The eldest son William 1759-1818 was admitted Lincolns Inn 1777 and became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries 1784 secretary of it by 1797, Another son the Rev George was born 6.…

23.5.1790 F North at Paradise's. In 1794 version of Godwin's 1796 list but left out of 1796 version 

Probably not the blind and ageing politician Lord North but either his son Francis DNB 1761-1817 who wrote a play 'The Kentish Baron' 1791 or his son Frederick DNB 1766-1827 who was a Fellow of Royal Society and joined Greek Orthodox church, so very much up Paradise's street but perhaps abroad at this time

 


North, Richard Toulmin

R North 24.3.1800 at Reynolds'

Richard Toulmin North baptised 13.3.1782 Kirby Lonsdale, Lancs son of Miles & Susanna North. His mother married Miles North in 1778 and married 2ndly in 1799 the older brother of Frederick Reynolds DNB 1764-1841 (see Reynolds, Richard). He inherited the Manor of Tunstal and became a JP for West Yorks and a Major in the militia. A sad, or amusing account of his later "lunacy" can be found in the Morning Post of 27.2.1847. He was dead by 1866

This must mean Northcote junior but there is nothing in James Northcote DNB 1736-1831 to suggest who that could have been. Northcote was unmarried with one older brother and one sister. He may have had an illegitimate son or a nephew who died before he did, (otherwise they would probably have been mentioned in his will). 14.9.1802 to 18.9.1802 and 24.9.1803 to 11.10.1803 should have not in London tag. NOW CORRECTED on GD website but 17.7.1821 to 20.7.1821 should also have this tag

Nunnis being a rare to nonexistent surname was probably Godwin's mistake for Nunnick on first hearing

A very rare name spelt thus, only appeared once in Godwin's diary, so who was Nutton senior? Often spelt Nutting, as when James Nutton widower of Shoreditch married Sarah Bedson widow there 20.5.1804 he signed his name Nutting, a much commoner name
