Sharp, William

SOCIETY FOR CONSTITUTIONAL INFORMATION: William Sharpe of Charles St, Cavendish Square proposed member 22.3.1792 by John Horne Tooke 2nded John Augustus Bonney

William Sharp DNB 1749-1824

Sharpe

20.11.1809 call on Sharpe

In a string of calls on mostly booksellers going west from St Pauls to Piccadilly, this was very likely John Sharpe bookseller & publisher at 186 Piccadilly (bbti, Holdens directory 1811 Sharpe & Hailes). Coded on GD website to a generic Sharpe person record

Sharpe, Granville

22.11.1794 (alongside week ending) Sharpe Gram at Tooke's trial.

Surely Granville Sharp DNB 1735-1813. In Godwin's 1796 list for 1790 he put Rd Sharpe, then Gram (crossed out). There are two Sharpe entries in 1790, one on 15.3.1790 at Brand Hollis' and one on 4.11.1790 at the Revolution Society, where Sharpe was one of the supporters of Horne Tooke's motion against the nobility, along with Cooper and Favell. One of them must have been Richard Sharp as the 1796 list made clear, and probably both were.

Sharpe, Mrs

2.11.1795 at Richard Johnson's

Perhaps accompanying a daughter of the recently deceased James Boswell, Betsy aged 15 or more likely Euphemia aged 21. Not found the name in the indexes to Boswell's Journal

Sharples

Sharpless 23.8.1801 calls / 10.11.1801 Sharples calls / 16.11.1801 Sharples calls (sit)

James Sharples DNB 1751/2-1811 portrait painter (identified by the "sit"). The spelling Sharpless was used for his vote as portrait painter of Gerrard St Soho for Hood & Wray in 1764, and the two spellings were quite often given as alternatives for one person, surprisingly perhaps as we would now pronounce them each quite differently
