Joseph Townsend DNB 1739-1816. Friend of Jeremy Bentham. Joseph Farington in his diary (p1497 & p 1499) in 1801 met Rev Mr Townsend author of A Tour In Spain at Mr Warner's Bath (see Warner, Richard). (Other Townsends in DNB, George T independent minister Ramsgate father of George T DNB 1788-1857, John T DNB 1757-1826 independent minister at Bermondsey from 1784, Henry Hare T (1765? - 1827) son of James T DNB 1737-1787 and father of Chauncy Hare T DNB 1798-1868 but Joseph T seems much more likely)

Robert Townson DNB 1762-1827 in London from 1797, published Travels in Hungary 1797, Philosophy of Mineralogy 1798, Tract's & observations in natural history & physiology & poor man's moralist 1798. The brackets suggest Godwin didn't meet Townson but talked about him with, or borrowed one of his books from William Nicholson

Sigismund Trafford born 15.5.1762 son of Sir Clement Boehm Trafford of Dunton Hall Lincs and his wife Jane (died 1809) dau of Edward Southwell of Wisbeach. Emanuel College Cambridge 1780. adm Lincolns Inn 1782. took surname Southwell c1791. Married 30.8.1791 at Lakenham, Margaret eldest daughter of James Crowe of Norwich. Subscr 1798 to Wm Enfield 1799 to Adam Walker. Of Tooke's Wood Norwich, & Wroxham hall (6 miles NE of Norwich). Lt Royal Regt Dragoons 7.1811. Died 1.8.1827

Travers

30.9.1808 Travers calls

Only appearance in Godwin's diary, but quite likely Benjamin Travers DNB 1783-1858 surgeon. He had recently married Sarah daughter of William Morgan DNB 1750-1833 and was a colleague of Henry Cline DNB 1750-1827, both acquaintances of Godwin. The only other Travers in Holdens 1811 directory in London were Joseph Travers Esq (a City grocer), two watchmakers in Clerkenwell, and a shoemaker.

Hon. Elizabeth Trefusis died 9.9.1808 in 45th year 'sister to late and aunt to present Lord Clinton' (Hampshire Telegraph 19.9.1808). Her Poems and Tales published 1806. Her will PCC 1808 spinster of James St Buckingham Gate, sister Barbara Crowley Trefusis

John Troby silversmith Old Bailey will PCC 4.9.1804 mentioned his wife Mary (1753-1838) and son William Bamforth Troby. John Troby son of John Troby musician of Soho was made free of Farriers Company 1796. Children of John & Mary Troby bapt St Martin Ludgate Harriet 1789, William Bamforth 1791, Hannah 1793. Children of John & Mary Troby bapt Sheffield Margaret 1774 Elizabeth 1776 Mary 1780 Thomas 1782 could have been the same family

GD website has person record for J B Trotter but the first 3 entries above have not been coded to him and should be. The Trotters were from Downpatrick like the Hawthorns (if these Hawthorns were indeed the family of Steele Hawthorn, which I haven't proven) but J B Trotter's older brother had changed his name to Ruthven and his younger brother had just died at…

On 29.7.95 J Tucker wrote a somewhat flirtatious letter to Godwin, from Whitestone (near Exeter) and sent by the hand of Thomas Cooper, in which she mentioned Mrs Cole's and Miss Braddock's conversations on Godwin's reasons for not employing a servant (Ms Abinger c.2 f106-7). Turner, Hugh

Godwin saw a lot of Thomas Turner around this time, H T may have been his father Hugh Turner, butcher of 11 Leigh St Red Lion Square. Hugh and wife Ann had at least three children June born 1780, Mary born 1782 and Thomas born 1785, all while they were at Dean Street, Holborn. Thomas (who has a person record in GD website) was articled to Thomas Lane as an attorney's clerk in 1800. He was admitted to the Middle Temple in 1811 and called to the bar in 1820.. see Highfill, Burnim & Langhans. A Mr Turner from the Norwich company made his London debut as Macbeth at Covent Garden on 15.12.1798 and got a bad review in the Monthly Mirror but received support from gentlemen of his fraternity, the law. The GD website has a person record but it is only linked to the 1804 date
