Staunton, George Leonard

9.5.1790 Staunton at Paradise's and 23.5.1790 there.

Sir George Leonard Staunton DNB 1737-1801 Fellow of Royal Society is a likely Paradise guest. Staunton appeared in the 1794 version of Godwin's 1796 list for 1790 (crossed out) but in the 1796 version for 1795. Godwin called on him 9.4.1795. Godwin may have overlooked or forgotten the earlier encounters or perhaps considered the 1790 meetings as insufficient contact (see Wolcot, John for a similar move)

Jeremiah Steel, baker of Lewes (PCC 1819)and his wife Lydia (PCC 1832). They were Quakers and probably known to Godwin through Thomas Clio Rickman who had been ejected from the Lewes meeting for marrying outside the Society. Steel and William Balcombe Langridge (qv) were both subscribers to Rickman's book of poetry.

Steele

at Steele's with Lloyd, Trusson & Rutherford 27.12.1790.

Steele didn't appear again till 13.2.1795 when Godwin met him, & Bosville before dining at John King's, where Steele dined on 22.1.1796 & 16.5.1796, those three entries were probably the barrister David Steel who represented King in court and was an associate of his; then there was M A Steele (qv) on 23.7.1795 & 6.10.1799 and Steele on 24.11.1796 all associated with Hannah Godwin, and one more Steele on 22.1.1814, adv perhaps at theatre perhaps with W Curran. Sterling, Joseph

2.7.1789 Stirling at Billingsgate with Robinson &c. / Sterling at Holcroft's 13.7.1794. In Godwin's 1796 list for 1789 and in 1794 version.

Joseph Sterling DNB fl 1765-1794. Sterling's poems were published in Dublin in 1781 by Luke White, in London in 1794 by T Payne, and in London in 1789 by Robinson, so three of his publishers were present at this dinner. He lived chiefly in Ireland but his presence in London in 1794 coincided with the publication of his Odes there. George Cecil of Dublin was his uncle, published his first work and left him a legacy.

Steven

Steven 1.1.1803 at Philips

Possibly James Stephen DNB 1758-1832 but as a Clapham Sect slavery abolitionist would perhaps not have been at Richard Phillips more radical gathering. His War in Disguise was published in 1805 and sold by Hatchard and by Butterworth, more establishment booksellers. The name Steven so spelt was not entirely uncommon in London, though much commoner in Scotland, in PCC wills there were John Steven Lt RN 1803 (proved 22.3), William Steven tailor of Charing Cross 1808 (voted Fox & Tooke 1796, Fox & Gardner 1802, Hood 1806), Margaret Steven widow of…
