These are notes on my methods of researching unidentified people in Godwin's diary, (which I guess could also be useful for all research on individuals from that era about whom information is scarce). The real art is in being familiar with all the different sources and cross-checking them until a picture starts to emerge.

My dad, who died when I was 19, back in 1967, had showed me the Pope family tree, mostly researched by his father. He let me pore freely over the 1911 edition of the Encyclopaedia Brittanica, from which I copied out lists of Egyptian pharaohs. And he sent me to St Neots' School, Eversley, Hants, where at the age of 10 I came top in a school of 8 to 13 year old boys in a history test sat by the whole school. I've always liked history and it came naturally to me, but it has come and gone in different phases of my life.

GODWIN DIARY Dr Warner 25.12.1796 at H Tooke's. In Godwin's 1796 list for 1796 as dr Warner. In GD website his person record seems to be blank or missing and the entry in the 1796 list is not coded.

In Godwin's 1796 list near end of 1796 but not coded to his person record in GD website. For Pratts 15.7.1796 at Astleys in Norfolk, wrongly coded to him, see Pratt, Edward Rogers. For Pratt 3.9.1804 and 15.8.1813 both probably wrongly coded to him, see my entry Pratt. Samuel Jackson Pratt was in the Kings Bench prison from 24.4.1799 to 13.9.1799 at the suit of John Comerford and Hanway Hanway (qv)

see GD website for De Camp. Maria Theresa Kemble.DNB 1777-1838 married Charles Kemble in 1806. Her brother Vincent 1779-1839 (Highfill Burnim & Langhans) was also an actor and probably the mr Decamp of 1802, their father George Lewis De Camp died in 1787
