Taylor, Philip

Submitted by edpope on

8.7.1796 call on J Taylor, adv Philip, Morris & mrs W Barnard / 21.7.1796 dine at J Taylor's, with Philip, Samuel, Thomas & T Barnard

Although Philip Taylor DNB 1786-1870 civil engineer was ten years old, these names don't fit his brothers John, Richard, Edward and Arthur, but they do fit the brothers of John Taylor DNB 1750-1826, Philip b1747, Meadows b1755, Samuel b1757 and Thomas b1758, particularly if Meadows by nickname or Godwin's mistake was noted as Morris.

Hooke, Miss

6.7.1796 call on miss Hooke (in Norfolk)

Perhaps Martha Hooke will PCC 1813 spinster of Norwich, friends Elisha de Hague and William Simpson both of Norwich executors. Mentioned Benjamin Randall and Naomi, widow of late brother Edmund Hooke, his will PCC 1812 of St Giles Norwich and Mulbarton, which was close to Bracon where Merry lived and Godwin was apparently staying

squire to Scole

Submitted by edpope on

2.7.1796 squire to Scole

The Scole Inn was a coaching inn halfway between Ipswich and Norwich. squire is odd for not having a capital letter, if it was intended as a verb, the meaning is obscure. If a proper name it could have referred to Charles Squire, gentleman of Ipswich (will PCC 1817), Edmund Squire, liquor merchant of Bury (will PCC 1835), or Edward Squire, merchant of Norwich, or the name of a local carrier, though not found in directories.

Franklin, Miss

Submitted by edpope on

1.7.1796 on Mail to Ipswich with Merry, R(ichard) B(runton) & miss Franklin

Perhaps a young lady who was looking after Richard Brunton, the youngest brother of Merry's wife (see next day's entry, Richard enfant), who would have been about 5 years old (see Exeter Flying Post 20.8.1846 and Ipswich Journal 15.8.1846). Perhaps related to Robert Henry Franklin (Highfill, Burnim & Langhans) 1769-1802 manager of a theatre company operating in the East Midlands will PCC 1802

See also Clarke, Mrs (work notes) / Clarke, Dr John / Clarke mystic for earlier entries of this name. The two entries at Tooke's had no other guest in common. In DNB sympathies with radical politics are noted for John Clarke 1757-1820 schoolmaster and Adam Clarke 1762-1832 Methodist and scholar. The last three could have been Dr John Clarke, or the Clarke at Tooke's, or another
