Jacob, Joseph

Jacob in Godwin's 1796 list for 1773, in the 1794 version Jacob is preceded by Jos (crossed out). In some of Godwin's autobiographical notes (these ones don't seem to be scanned online, I read them on microfilm Duke MF 75 in Bodleian Library) he wrote "Jacob's - admiration of Jos" shortly after his arrival in London 1773

Kingsman

On 13.3.1794 Godwin dined at Wedgwood's where Kinsman was present. On 26.9.1798 he met miss Kinsman near Watford. In (Abinger c.17 f66-7) is a copy of Godwin's letter to her about that meeting. In reply he got a letter from her brother H Kingsman who said he knew Godwin (Abinger c.4 f47-8). In the 1796 list E Kingsman is towards the end of 1798, and D Kingsman near the start of 1799. On 8.5.1799 at Langley-berry he saw Mrs and Misses Kingman. Dorothea and Emily were the daughters of William Long Kingsman of Langleybury, Herts. Dorothea died in 1800 (her will Nat Arch PROB11/1348).

Foulkes, John

F's on 21.6.1795 must be Foulkes', as Watley only appeared at Foulkes'. Seems to be a case of Godwin using the abbreviation because the space was full in the diary

Rutherford, William

Calls on Godwin 15.9.1818, identified by Godwin's letter to his wife as 'of Barbadoes' (Abinger c.42 f139). This was William Rutherford who married Eliza Ann Fenwick at St Michael Barbadoes on 29.8.1812. He was the son of Thomas Rutherford, a Methodist minister 1752-1806 (will Nat Arch PROB11/1450) and his wife Isabella (will Nat Arch PROB11/1602). Wishing to become an actor, he crossed the ocean in order not to embarrass his parents. His father had been a 'sort of a ward' of Eliza Fenwick's father Peter Jaco, also a Methodist minister (I.Grundy, intro.
