Nichols

(mes) Nichols 16.3.1789 at Miss Williams' / 11.12.1789 mrs Nichols there /  9.2.1790 (mes) Nichols there

1786 subscribers to HMWilliams' poems Rev Norton Nicholls, Mrs Nicholls. As the Rev Norton Nicholls DNB -1807 never married this may have been his mother Jane nee Floyer. Might also have been his cousin Philippa Nicholls baptised 5.12.80 Tickhill, Yorks mentioned (in Hester Piozzi? or Joanna Baillie? letters online - sorry lost this ref) as recovering at Hot Wells 1795 died unmarried 1797

Hunter, Anne

Submitted by edpope on

16.3.1789 Hunter at Miss Williams' and 11.3.1791 (where it is wrongly coded to her husband John) as the 'Mes' makes it clear it was female both times. Anne Hunter DNB 1742/3-1821. In Godwin's 1796 list for 1791 and in the 1794 version as mrs J Hunter, which suggests that the 1789 entry might have been her daughter Agnes. The 1796 list entry has not been coded to her person record on the GD website

Baillie, Matthew

Submitted by edpope on

16.3.1789 Dr Bailey & sisters at Miss Williams'. Baillie in Godwin's 1796 list for 1788 inserted above, and not in 1794 version, but miss Weston who was in 1794 version was left out of the 1796 list in the same place where Baillie was inserted. No Baillie in diary till 1789.

Matthew Baillie DNB 1761-1823, Joanna Baillie DNB 1762-1851 where is mentioned Agnes Baillie 1760-1861. Also there 31.7.1789 presumably Matthew and 12.2.1790 one or both of the sisters as part of plural 'Mes'

Lisakovicz

8.3.1789 Lisakovicz at Holcroft's. In Godwin's 1796 list for 1789, crossed out, and in 1794 version.

General Robert Thomas Wilson DNB 1777-1849 sent a letter in 1807 to Chevalier Lisakovitz who was clearly an important Russian officer but at that time in Holstein. (Life of Sir Robert Wilson)

Potts, James

Submitted by edpope on

2.3.1789 Nicol & Potts at Robinson's and 9.3.1789 same pair at Hamilton's.

George Nicol DNB 1740-1828 bookseller and James Potts (R Pollard, Dublin Book Trade 1733-96) seem a likely pair to have been dining with these publishers (and see Jenkins 22.1.1789)

2.3.1789 Nicol & Potts at Robinson's / 9.3.1789 same pair at Hamilton's. In 1794 version of Godwin's 1796 list, Nicol near end of 1787, left out of 1796 version.

George Nicol DNB 1740-1828 bookseller and James Potts (R Pollard, Dublin Book Trade 1733-96) seem a likely pair to have been dining with these publishers (and see Jenkins, Caleb)
